Box Score The Wright State men's basketball team jumped out to a 27-5 lead and held off comeback attempts by Green Bay in the second half as the Raiders went on to a 78-67 Horizon League win Saturday night at the Nutter Center.
WSU scored the first eight points of the contest, half of those coming from Jordan Pleiman, and extended the lead to 15-2 at the 14:40 mark on a Drew Burleson three and layups from Vaughn Duggins and DaShaun Wood. Threes from Duggins and Reinaldo Smith later gave the Raiders a 27-5 advantage with 9:37 remaining in the first half.
The Raiders held their biggest lead of the night at 31-8 following a Todd Brown tip-in with 4:46 left in the half, but the Phoenix closed the period on threes from Mike Schachtner and Troy Cotton to make it 34-18 at the break.
Green Bay continued to chip away early in the second half as three-point plays by Schachtner and Terry Evans closed the margin to 34-24 at the 18:20 mark. The Raiders, though, answered with threes from Duggins and Wood and had the advantage back up to 49-30 with 12 minutes to play.
The Phoenix came as close as 71-62 in the final minute on a Ryan Evanochko three, but WSU sealed the win by outscoring UWGB 7-2 over a 47-second span, capped off by a Pleiman dunk.
Both teams shot well over the final 20 minutes as Green Bay hit for 55 percent to finish the night at 44 percent overall while the Raiders were at 55 percent in the second half to end up at 50 percent altogether. Wright State also held a 38-25 rebounding advantage, including an 8-3 edge in offensive boards, which resulted in a 11-2 differential in second-chance points.
All of the Raider starters scored eight or more points, led by Brown's season-high 21 points along with nine rebounds. Wood added 14 points, seven assists and five boards, while Burleson had 11 points and nine rebounds, Duggins 11 points and seven rebounds and Pleiman eight points.
Evanochko paced all scorers with 27 for Green Bay (10-8, 2-3 Horizon), all but two coming in the second half, while Evans and Schachtner each had 10.
Wright State, now 11-7 overall and 4-1 in the Horizon League, hits the road for five of its next six games, starting with Cleveland State on Thursday, January 18, at 7:00.
