Men Defeat IPFW 72-58

Box Score

A 17-5 first-half run put the Wright State men's basketball team in front to stay as the Raiders went on to a 72-58 decision over the IPFW Mastodons at the Nutter Center Tuesday night.

IPFW led 14-11 on a Jaraun Burrows layup with 11:03 to play in the first half, but WSU followed with that decisive 17-5 run over the next six minutes, including two three-pointers by Vaughn Duggins, to regain the advantage at 28-19. The Raiders extended the margin to as much as 12 on two occasions later in the period, including 35-23 at the break after a last-second tip-in from Scottie Wilson.

A Drew Burleson jumper with 7:37 reamining gave Wright State its largest lead at 55-38, but the Mastodons responded with a 14-4 run, including threes from DeWitt Scott, Zeljko Egeric and Jakari Johnson, to cut the deficit to 59-52 with still 3:33 to play.

The Raiders, though, sealed the win by hitting nine of 10 foul shots down the stretch, six of those coming from DaShaun Wood.

Both teams shot the ball well in the final 20 minutes as Wright State shot 56 percent to end the night at 49 percent overall while IPFW hit for 59 percent in the second half to finish at 43 percent.

The big difference, however, came at the foul line as the Raiders made 26 of 31 from the stripe, including an impressive 17 of 18 in the second half, compared to just six of 11 overall for the Mastodons, who were four of eight in the second half.

IPFW had the edge in rebounds (31-27), second-chance points (13-10) and points off the bench (36-14), but WSU countered by forcing 22 turnovers while committing just 14, resulting in a 21-14 advantage in points off of turnovers.

Wood paced all scorers with 24 for Wright State, half of those coming on a perfect 12-for-12 performance at the foul line. Todd Brown, in his first-ever start as a Raider, added 10 points as did Jordan Pleiman. In all, WSU had six players scored six or more points.

Scott led IPFW (4-11) with 21 off the bench, including five three-pointers, but no other Mastodon mananged more than eight.

Wright State, now 8-6 on the season and winners of three straight, looks to continue that momentum Thursday night as the Raiders return to Horizon League play by hosting the UIC Flames in a 7:00 contest.
