Box Score The Wright State men's basketball team jumped out to a 14-2 lead and held off a Youngstown State charge in the second half before defeating the Penguins 62-49 in Horizon League action at the Nutter Center Wednesday night.
The Raiders scored 12 straight over a 5:30 span to break a 2-2 tie, seven of those coming from DaShaun Wood. Despite YSU cutting the defict to seven on three different occasions, Wright State took a 34-23 lead at the half on a Jordan Pleiman dunk and a Wood jumper in the final minute.
WSU shot 52 percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes compared to 39 percent for the Penguins.
Youngstown State used drew to within six twice in the first six minutes of the second half, but the Raiders followed with a 12-4 run, including two three-pointers and the final eight points overall by Todd Brown, to go up 48-34 with 11:05 to play.
The Penguins closed the gap to 54-47 on two Keston Roberts free throw at the 6:10 mark, but could get no closer as a Vaughn Duggins three and a Wood off-balance jumper pushed the lead back into double figures for the remainder of the contest.
Wright State shot 46 percent in the second half to finish at 49 percent overall while YSU hit for 38 percent the final 20 minutes to end the night at 38 percent. The Penguins had the rebounding edge (32-27) and hit nine of 10 from the foul line to just four of nine for WSU, but the Raiders led in second-chance points 16-6 and in points off turnovers 19-6 as they forced 16 turnovers while committing only nine.
Wood led the way for Wright State with 17 points and added seven assists and five steals, while Brown chipped in 16 points, including four three-pointers. Pleiman had a near double-double of nine points and 11 rebounds, Duggins had nine points and Drew Burleson eight.
Quin Humphrey paced all scorers with 22 for Youngstown State (9-12, 4-5 Horizon), 13 in the second half, while Roberts had 10 and Jack Liles six along with nine boards.
Wright State, now 13-8 overall and 6-2 in the Horizon League, hits the road for three straight, starting with a visit to Loyola on Saturday, January 27, at 5:00 Eastern time.
