Box Score The Wright State volleyball team battled Horizon League co-leader Cleveland State tough most of the match, but came up on the short end against the Vikings Saturday afternoon at Woodling Gymnasium, falling 26-30, 30-27, 34-36, 18-30.
Game one featured four lead changes and 14 ties, including at 25 following a Tara Geegan kill. Cleveland State, though, went in front to stay with two straight points and finished the game with a 5-1 burst overall.
The Raiders broke a 10-10 tie in the second game with five unanswered points, including a kill each from Samantha Connor, Geegan and Alisha Kimbro. CSU drew as close as 28-27 on a kill and service ace by Liz Fazio, but Wright State was able to even the match at a game apiece as the final two points came on a bad set and an attack error by the Vikings.
The third game was much like the first, with seven lead changes and 17 ties. WSU reached game point on five different occasions, the final time being 34-33 after a Kimbro kill, but Cleveland State found a way each time to keep the game alive and finally pulled it out on a Kayla Lefeld kill and two Raider attack errors.
CSU was in command early in game four, jumping out to an 8-1 advantage, but Wright State was able to gradually cut the margin to 13-9. The Raiders, however, could get no closer as Cleveland State followed with three straight points and wrapped up the match by scoring the final five points.
The Vikings had just a slight edge in kills (65-60) and Wright State outblocked Cleveland State 17-6, but CSU countered by outhitting WSU .199-.144 and tallying 13 aces for the match compared to four for the Raiders.
Kimbro recorded her fifth straight double-double as she had 21 kills and 20 digs for the Raiders while Geegan added 12 kills and six blocks, Becca Awaa 10 kills, eight digs and seven blocks, and Connor a near double-double of nine kills and 10 digs. Lizzy Gunn chipped in 10 blocks, Lindsey Frank 47 assists and 14 digs and Lexi Leonhard 20 digs.
Korovich posted a double-double of 19 kills and 20 digs for Cleveland State (16-5, 9-1 Horizon) while Greulich had 12 kills and Benz and Lefeld 11 each.
Wright State, now 8-14 overall and 5-5 in the Horizon League, faces a light week ahead as the Raiders are off until heading to Valparaiso next Saturday, October 20, for a 6:00 Eastern match.
