Volleyball Rallies Past Butler in Five

Box Score

The Wright State volleyball team won its third straight match Friday night, but not without a struggle as the Raiders rallied from a 2-1 deficit for a five-game Horizon League decision over the Butler Bulldogs at Hinkle Fieldhouse.

The Raiders came out strong, scoring the first six points of the match and maintained at least a five-point margin the rest of the way in taking game one. WSU outhit the Bulldogs .295-.095 as Alisha Kimbro recorded six kills in the opening game while Lizzy Gunn added five.

Butler, though, broke a 7-7 tie in game two with six unanswered points and led 27-19 before Wright State narrowed the gap to 28-26 with a 7-1 run, three of those coming on kills from Samantha Connor. The Raiders, though, could get no closer as the Bulldogs evened the match on a service error and a Jessica Wolfe kill.

WSU looked to be in control of the third game as a Tara Geegan kill gave the Raiders a 26-21 lead, but the Bulldogs rallied back for the win by scoring nine of the final 11 points, capped off by a 5-0 run.

Butler again made a late rally in game four, using a 6-2 burst to cut the deficit to 26-23, but WSU forced a fifth game on a ball handling error and kills by Gunn and Becca Awaa.

The Bulldogs led 4-2 in game five following a Porshia Allen kill, only to see Wright State score four straight points to take the lead for good, half coming on two Geegan kills. The margin was just 9-8 after a Raider attack error, but WSU maintained the advantage on kills from Awaa and Connor and wrapped up the match as Kimbro and Geegan each recorded a kill.

WSU outhit Butler .250-.185 and had the edge in kills (76-68) and blocks (14-12), marking the fifth straight match and 14th time overall this season that the Raiders have recorded double figures in blocks for a match.

Five Wright State players reached double figures in kills, with two posting double-doubles in Kimbro (19 kills, 15 digs) and Connor (12 kills, 15 digs). Geegan added 18 kills and eight blocks in hitting .455, Gunn 12 kills and Awaa 10 in hitting .529. Lindsey Frank chipped in 64 assists and 15 digs while Lexi Leonhard had 19 digs.

Allen had a monster match for Butler (11-13, 4-8 Horizon) with a double-double effort of 28 kills and 21 digs in hitting .377 while Katie Daprile also had a double-double of 11 kills and 11 digs.

Wright State, now 11-14 overall and 7-5 in the Horizon League, closes out the nonleague portion of its schedule on Wednesday, October 31, as the Raiders host crosstown rival and #17 Dayton at the C.J. McLin Gymnasium. First serve is set for 7:00.
