Volleyball Sweeps Butler

Box Score

The Wright State volleyball team capped off a 3-0 week by sweeping the Butler Bulldogs in Horizon League play Saturday afternoon at the C.J. McLin Gymnasium, winning 30-16, 30-25, 30-25.

Butler led 5-4 in the first game after a Dana Daprile kill, but the Raiders responded with a 16-2 run to take control, which featured three kills from Alisha Kimbro along with two kills and two blocks by Tara Geegan.

The Bulldogs again had the early advantage in game two at 4-1, including two Michelle DeGeeter kills, only to see WSU chip away and eventually go in front at 12-11 with three straight points, two on kills by Kimbro and Samantha Connor.

The two teams were tied again at 14, 17 and 18 before a Butler service error and attack error gave Wright State the lead for good. A later kill and service ace from Kimbro on back-to-back plays helped the Raiders build a 25-21 margin.

Game three was tied six times before WSU broke open a 12-12 deadlock with a 7-1 burst, four coming on a pair of kills each from Kimbro and Geegan. Butler trimmed the deficit to three on three different occasions before Wright State took advantage of a pair of Bulldogs attack errors to close out the match.

The Raiders had a slight edge in kills (48-40) but outhit Butler .248-.095 as WSU had just 15 attack errors compared to 26 for the Bulldogs.

Kimbro recorded her third double-double of the week as she led Wright State with 15 kills and 10 digs in hitting .342 for the match. Geegan added nine kills and four block assists while Connor had eight kills and Lizzy Gunn six.

Setter Lindsey Frank nearly posted a triple-double as she tallied 32 assists and 12 digs along with seven kills and no errors in 13 attempts in hitting .538. Libero Lexi Leonhard chipped in 22 digs.

DeGeeter paced Butler (9-10, 3-5 Horizon) with 13 kills and eight digs while Porshia Allen posted a double-double of 10 kills and 11 digs. Libero Nina Inic had 16 digs and Katie Daprile added 14.

Wright State, now 8-12 overall and 5-3 in the Horizon League, heads to Northeast Ohio next weekend to start the second round of League play, taking on Youngstown State on Friday, October 12, at 7:00, followed by Cleveland State on Saturday, October 13, at 4:00.
