Box Score For the second straight Saturday, the Wright State men's basketball team faced a double-digit first half deficit, only to come back for a victory as the Raiders trailed by 15 six minutes into the contest before rallying for an 84-80 decision over Cal State Fullerton at Titan Gym.
The Titans came out on fire as they hit eight of their first nine shots to jump out to a 23-8 lead with 14:21 remaining in the first half. WSU, however, chipped away at the deficit and eventually took the lead at 29-27 following a 13-0 run, including two Todd Brown three-pointers.
Fullerton led 43-41 at the break as the Titans shot 58 percent from the field compared to 59 percent for the Raiders. Fullerton also hit eight of 15 from behind the arc to WSU's four for eight, but Wright State countered by hitting 11 of 16 from the foul line to just five of seven for the Titans.
The Titans were still up 54-49 on a Frank Robinson layup with 14:21 remaining, but the Raiders followed with a 17-7 run over the next seven minutes, seven of those by Scottie Wilson and six by Jordan Pleiman. CSF tied the game at 69 at the 4:27 mark on two Junior Russell free throws, only to see John David Gardner break the deadlock with a foul shot with 4:07 left.
That gave the Raiders the lead for good, but it was still a one-possession game until Wilson connected on a three with 1:32 remaining to make it 77-73. A later Brown dunk and two Pleiman free throws helped seal the victory.
Wright State continued its hot shooting in the second half, hitting for 55 percent to finish at 57 percent while Fullerton shot 48 percent the final 20 minutes to end up at 53 percent. The Titans hit 11 of 26 from three-point range compared to seven of 16 for the Raiders, but at the foul line, WSU was 19 of 30 while Fullerton was 13 of 18.
Wilson had 19 points and eight rebounds to lead the Raiders while Pleiman also had 19 points, Brown 16 and Duggins 12 along with eight assists.
Josh Akognon paced Fullerton (6-3) with 23 points while Robinson had 22 and Scott Cutley 13.
Wright State, now 6-3 on the season, heads to Chattanooga, Tennessee, next weekend for the Dr. Pepper Classic. The Raiders will take on Belmont in the opening round on Saturday, December 29, at 6:00, and will face Murray State or host Chattanooga on Sunday, December 30. The consolation game is set for Sunday at 6:00 with the championship at 8:00.
