Men Pull Away for 68-55 Win Over Cleveland State

Box Score

A 15-0 run proved to be the difference for the Wright State men's basketball team as the Raiders picked up their eighth straight win Wednesday night with a 68-55 Horizon League decision over the Cleveland State Vikings at the Nutter Center.

CSU led 11-6 early as Patrick Tatham scored nine of the 11 points, but Wright State followed by scoring seven unanswered points, capped off by a DaShaun Wood three-point play, to take the lead for the first time.

A Joe Davis foul shot broke the string, but the Raiders went on another 7-0 burst, the first five coming from Todd Brown, to go up 20-12. WSU eventually led by as much as 11 on two different occasions before the Vikings outscored Wright State 8-3 over the final 1:35 to trail 33-27 at the break.

The Vikings continued to chip away at the deficit and tied the game at 39 at the 15:56 mark following layups from Victor Morris and J'Nathan Bullock. Neither team then had more than a two-point lead for the next seven minutes and the game was tied again, this time at 51, after a Raheem Moss jumper with 9:14 remaining.

Brown, however, would start the Raiders on their decisive run with a three in the right corner and then connected on another triple from the left wing to make it 57-51. Yet another three, this time by Wood, followed by Vaughn Duggins finding Drew Burleson on a back-door layup extended the margin to 62-51 with 6:19 left.

Layups from Wood and Burleson capped off the 15-0 run and Cleveland State was unable to get any closer than 11 the rest of the way as two Wood foul shots with two minutes remaining rounded out the scoring.

Both teams had solid nights shooting the ball overall as Wright State hit for 49 percent, including 55 percent in the second half, and CSU was at 44 percent. The Raiders, though, also shot the three well, making seven of 16 for 44 percent compared to six of 25 for the Vikings, and had a near perfect night at the foul line, hitting 15 of 16 attempts, to just five of eight for Cleveland State.

Brown led all scorers with 22 for the Raiders, 13 coming in the second half, along with five rebounds while Wood added 14 points, six assists and five boards. Burleson had a near double-double of 13 points and nine rebounds and Duggins chipped in eight.

Tatham and Davis each had 12 to pace Cleveland State (8-19, 2-12 Horizon) while Morris had 10 points and five assists and Bullock added nine points and seven rebounds.

Wright State, now 20-8 overall and 13-2 in the Horizon League, has reached the 20-win plateau for the first time since the 1992-93 squad went 20-10, won the Mid-Continent Conference Tournament and advanced to the NCAA Division I Tournament. The eight-game winning streak is the longest for the Raiders since they won 22 straight during a 28-3 1985-86 campaign that saw WSU advance to the NCAA Division II Tournament.

The Raiders now take a break from Horizon League on Saturday night at 8:00 as they welcome in the Cal State Fullerton Titans as part of the O'Reilly Auto Parts ESPNU Bracketbusters.
