Box Score The Wright State volleyball team rallied back from a 2-1 game deficit to defeat the Cleveland State Vikings in the Horizon League opener for both teams Friday night at the C.J. McLin Gymnasium, winning 30-25, 24-30, 22-30, 30-25, 16-14.
Tara Geegan led the Raiders to the win in game one with five kills and two block assists, but Cleveland State took the next two games with a 33-25 margin in kills and recorded eight blocks compared to five for WSU.
Wright State then held a slim 17-14 advantage in game four before pulling away with a 9-3 run, including the final four in order on a pair of Viking errors along with a Lindsey Frank kill and a block from Becca Awaa and Geegan.
Cleveland State scored three straight points, including two Jenni Ramminger kills, to go up 7-6 in the decisive fifth game, but WSU followed with three in a row of its own to go back in front 9-7.
The Vikings eventually tied the game at 10 on a Kayla Lefeld kill, but the Raiders looked to be in control as they scored four of the next five points, three on kills by Awaa, Geegan and Alisha Kimbro, to reach match point at 14-11.
CSU would not go away quietly as Amy Benz and Beth Greulich had back-to-back blocks and a Raider attack error tied the game at 14, but Wright State claimed the match on consecutive Viking errors.
Cleveland State had a sizable advantage in kills (72-59), but also committed 42 attack errors compared to just 30 for Wright State.
Geegan led the Raiders with 17 kills and added seven block assists while Samantha Connor had 13 kills and Kimbro posted a double-double of 10 kills and 20 digs along with four aces. Frank chipped in 49 assists and 12 digs, Lexi Leonhard 19 digs from the libero spot and Jessica Woods 14 digs.
Benz recorded a rare double-double of 12 kills and 11 blocks assists for Cleveland State (7-5, 0-1 Horizon) as she hit .522 for the match. Alexis Korovich had a double-double of 11 kills and 21 digs while Greulich nearly had one of 12 kills and nine block assists. Ramminger had 14 kills, libero Jordan Bateman 26 digs and setter Mel Snyder 61 assists and 12 digs as she also hit .353 with seven kills.
Wright State (3-9, 1-0 Horizon) returns to action Saturday afternoon at 4:00 by hosting the Youngstown State Penguins in another Horizon League match.
