Men Slip Past Loyola

Box Score

Wright State made it back-to-back one-point wins in Chicago Saturday night as two Vaughn Duggins free throws with 22 seconds left gave the Raiders a 53-52 Horizon League win over the Loyola Ramblers at the Gentile Center.

The first half featured six ties over the first 14 minutes until the Raiders went up 23-18 on a Duggins three and a Cooper Land jumper. The margin was still five on a N'Gai Evans basket before Loyola's Tracy Robinson scored the final five points of the period to tie the game at 26 heading into the break.

Despite four more ties, WSU continued to lead for much of the second half and snapped a 45-all deadlock with six straight points on a Scottie Wilson three-pointer and a Jordan Pleiman three-point play to make it 51-45 with 3:05 remaining.

The Ramblers, however, would rally back and took a 52-51 lead on a Robinson dunk with 58 seconds left. On WSU's next possession, Duggins was fouled in the lane as the shot clock was winding down and he connected on both free throw attempts at the 22.1-second mark to put the Raiders ahead for good.

Loyola had two final shots to win the game, but could not convert as time expired.

Wright State shot 48 percent for the game compared to 34 percent for the Ramblers, but Loyola stayed close throughout by going 11 of 16 from the foul line compared to just six of 10 for the Raiders. WSU led in points in the paint (20-14) and points off of turnovers (20-14).

Duggins led the Raiders with 14 points while Land had nine points off the bench. Pleiman scored all eight of his points in the second half while Todd Brown had six points and five assists.

Justin Cerasoli paced Loyola (6-12, 2-6 Horizon) with 16 points off the bench while J.R. Blount had 11 and Robinson 10.

Wright State, now 11-6 overall and 4-4 in the Horizon League, wraps up the first round of Horizon League play on Saturday, January 26, at Detroit. Tip-off is set for 4:00.
