Box Score Wright State held a double-digit lead early in both halves, but a 12-2 run over the final 4:19 proved to be the difference as the Raiders pulled out a 66-57 win over the Detroit Titans in Horizon League action Saturday afternoon at Calihan Hall.
The Raiders were on fire early, hitting their first five shots and six of seven to go up 14-6 just 5:28 into the game. Wright State eventually extended the lead to 23-9 on a Todd Brown layup at the 9:10 mark as the sophomore guard accounted for 12 of those 23 points.
Detroit closed the gap to six on four different occasion during the rest of the first half before the Raiders finished the period by scoring the final six points, four coming from Vaughn Duggins, to go up 36-24 at the break.
A Jordan Pleiman layup gave Wright State its largest lead of the game at 38-24 to start the second half, only to see the Titans respond with a 15-1 run, nine coming from Jon Goode and six by Chris Hayes, to tie the game at 39. A Scottie Wilson layup and two Brown foul shots temporarily slow the Detroit momentum until the Titans used a 7-0 burst to go 46-43 with 10:16 left.
Neither team then held more than a three-point lead over the next five minutes as Detroit went back in front 55-54 on a Woody Payne layup at the 4:34 mark.
Vaughn Duggins made 62-55. Wright State then sealed the game in the final minute on a pair of foul shots each by Troy Tabler and Brown.
The Raiders shot 45 percent for the game and hit 16 of 24 foul shots compared to 37 percent from the field and 12 of 18 from the line for Detroit. WSU also led in second-chance points (13-6) and points in the paint (30-20).
Four Raider starters scored in double figures as Brown led the way with 18 points while Wilson had 14, Pleiman 13 and Duggins 10. Brown and Pleiman each had added seven rebounds.
Detroit (4-15, 0-9 Horizon) was led by Goode's 17 points, 10 of those coming in the second half, while Chris Hayes had 16.
Wright State, now 12-6 overall and 5-4 in the Horizon League, begins a three-game homestand on Thursday, January 31, against Green Bay. Tip-off is at 7:00.
