Men Top Green Bay for Fourth Straight Win

Box Score

The Wright State men's basketball team made ten free throws over the final 7:45 and N'Gai Evans added the only basket over that stretch as the Raiders held on to defeat league rival Green Bay 71-67. The WSU reserves would steal the show on this night as they would outscore Green Bay's bench players 27-6 in the contest.

WSU opened the game hitting on all cylinders from the field as they raced out to an early 11-2 lead over the Phoenix. Vaughn Duggins, Troy Tabler and Will Graham all hit from beyond the arch and Duggins added a running jumper in the lane to give WSU the early lead at the 16:55 mark.

Green Bay answered, though, and eventually took the lead at 13-11 in a Ryan TIllema three pointer with 14:47 left in the first stanza. The two teams would each make runs over the next 12 minutes with no team holding larger than a two point advantage.

At the 2:24 mark in the half, with the game tied at 28-28, Todd Brown would connect from three point range to push WSU ahead. The Raiders pushed their lead to five points at the half as Cooper Land took a pass from Graham and converted a layup and then connected on a pair of free throws to give WSU a 35-30 advantage after one half of play.

WSU started the second half with a pair of Graham free throws, which would be the theme for WSU during the second half. The pair of freebees pushed the lead to 37-30, but a pair of Green Bay three point baskets cut the lead to only one.

WSU would make the deciding push in the game after UWGB cut the lead to one as Scottie Wilson converted a layup, Tabler connected from three point range and forced Green Bay (11-9, 5-5 HL) to take a time out with 15:41 to play.

From that point on the Raiders would use a 22-8 run, capped off by a Land three pointer to claim their largest lead of the game at 59-44. The 15 point lead would be test down the stretch as Green Bay forced the Green and Gold to make free throws.

Over the final 7:45 WSU made only one basket, an Evans layup, and make ten of their 19 free throw attempts. Evans would score six of his career-high 11 points in the final five minutes of the game.

The Green and Gold outscored the Phoenix 24-15 in points off of turnovers and make eight of their 17 attempts from behind the arch. Green Bay held a slight edge in the rebound column (29-28), but WSU would force 16 turnovers and block three shots in the contest.

Leading all scorers was Rahmon Fletcher with 18 points for UWGB, while Jordan Pleiman grabbed a game-high eight rebounds in the contest.

Duggins led all Raiders with 12 points, Evans chipped in a career-high 11 points off the bench, while Brown and Wilson each scored nine.

The Green and Gold improve to 13-6 overall and 6-4 in Horizon League play with the win and move into sole possession of fourth place in the league standing. WSU will return to the home court on Saturday, February 2 as they will host third place Milwaukee at 7:00 in the Ervin J. Nutter Center.
