Box Score After a tough loss to Valparaiso Tuesday, the Wright State volleyball team bounced back in a big way Wednesday night by defeating Horizon League co-leader Butler at the C.J. McLin Gymnasium, winning the match 25-15, 17-25, 25-19, 25-16.
The Raiders came out hitting in the first set, posting a .438 hitting percentage on 15 kills and just one error in 32 attempts. WSU scored the first three points, two on kills from Lexi Leonhard, and maintained the lead throughout as Leonhard finished the set with seven kills overall.
Butler, though, would hit .467 on 16 kills with two errors in 30 attempts in the second set to even the match, including five kills each from Dana Daprile and Porshia Allen.
The Bulldogs then went up 6-3 with four straight points in the third set, but, following a Wright State timeout, the Raiders answered with six unanswered, including a kill and ace by Leonhard. Butler crept to within one five different times, but WSU preserved the lead and closed out the set with a 6-1 burst, half coming on a pair of kills and a block from Shaunda Sandifer.
Set four was tied at 12 until Wright State took control with nine straight points, including two more Sandifer kills.
The Raiders held a slight edge in kills (54-52), but outhit the Bulldogs .255-.176 and led in blocks (12-7) and aces (5-1).
Leonhard paced the Raiders with a double-double of 14 kills and 13 digs while Sandifer recorded 13 kills in hitting .571 for the match. Awaa added 10 kills, Lizzy Gunn seven kills, 10 digs and seven blocks and Michelle Hammond 46 assists with 11 digs.
Allen led Butler (14-4, 4-2 Horizon) with a double-double of 13 kills and 12 digs while Jessica Wolfe also had a double-double of 12 kills and 12 digs. Daprile chipped in nine kills to go with 36 assists.
Wright State (7-12, 5-3 Horizon) takes a break from League play with the next two matches, starting on Saturday at 5:00 at Robert Morris.
