Volleyball Rallies for Five-Set Win at Butler

Box Score

Wright State won its fourth straight Friday night, but not without a struggle as the Raiders overcame a 2-0 deficit to defeat Butler in five sets in Horizon League action at Hinkle Fieldhouse, winning 24-26, 19-25, 27-25, 25-18, 15-9.

WSU led 23-19 in the first set following a Becca Awaa kill, only to see Butler scored the next five points, three on kills from Porshia Allen. Shaunda Sandifer tied it at 24 with a kill, but two more Allen kills gave the Bulldogs the win. The Raiders then trailed 17-16 in the second set before the Bulldogs again went on a late run, this time 7-0, to reach set point.

Butler was in position for the sweep, up 24-22 in the third set after a Wright State service error, but a Jessica Woods kill and a Bulldog attack error tied the score and kept the Raiders alive. After the two teams exchanged a point, WSU wrapped up the set on kills by Michelle Hammond and Lexi Leonhard.

A 12-4 run in the fourth set snapped a 9-9 deadlock and set the stage for the decisive fifth set, which saw the Raiders take control at 6-3 with four straight points on a Woods ace and kills from Leonhard, Hammond and Sandifer. Butler closed the margin to 7-6 before WSU put it out of reach by tallying five in a row, including three more Leonhard kills.

Wright State, in picking up its ninth straight win over Butler, held the advantage in kills (70-61) and hitting percentage (.224-.187) as the Raiders outhit the Bulldogs .257-.110 over the final three sets.

Leonhard had a monster night for WSU as she posted a double-double of 23 kills and 16 digs, with the 23 kills shattering her previous career high of 15 set on two previous occasions. Woods also had a double-double of 12 kills and 19 digs while Awaa nearly had one as well with 14 kills and nine digs. Sandifer added 10 kills, Hammond 58 assists and 13 digs and Leilani Tafuna 20 digs.

Allen paced Butler (18-10, 8-8 Horizon) with a double-double of 20 kills and 13 digs.

Wright State (15-14, 10-5 Horizon) closes out the regular season Saturday at Valparaiso, with the match starting at 5:00 Eastern time.
