Box Score Wright State could not overcome a .209-.114 hitting advantage by Cleveland State as the #6 seeded Vikings defeated the #3 seeded Raiders Friday night in the quarterfinals of the Horizon League Volleyball Tournament in Cleveland, winning 25-18, 25-17, 29-27.
Cleveland State took control of the first set by scoring four straight points to break a 10-10 tie and then used a 7-0 burst, four of those points coming on kills from Beth Greulich, to go up 21-12 in the second set.
Wright State led 17-14 in the third set following a Jessica Woods kill, only to see CSU again go on a run, this time 6-0, to go up 20-17. The Vikings later led 23-19 before WSU put together a run of its own of four consecutive points to tie it, including kills from Woods and Becca Awaa.
The two teams then exchanged the next four points, with Cleveland State taking the initial lead each time, before the Vikings closed out the match on kills by Liz Fazio and Greulich.
The Vikings held a 51-37 kill advantage as they outhit the Raiders .209-.114. Both teams had big nights blocking as CSU recorded 12.5 blocks compared to 10 for WSU.
Awaa led the Raiders with nine kills and had 11 digs while senior Lizzy Gunn, in her final match as a Raider, hit .353 with eight kills and added six block assists. Woods also had eight kills along with 13 digs, Lexi Leonhard seven kills and 18 digs, Leilani Tafuna 12 digs and Michelle Hammond 33 assists and 10 digs.
Greulich paced Cleveland State (9-18) with 10 kills while Amy Benz and Jenni Ramminger each had nine.
Wright State closes its season with a final record of 15-16.
