Men's Basketball Falls to Miami

Box Score

Wright State battled back from an early 10-point deficit to lead by one midway through the first half, but could not overcome a Miami 13-0 run later in the period as the RedHawks went on to defeat the Raiders 55-37 in men's basketball action at the Nutter Center Monday night.

The first half was one of streaks, starting with Miami breaking out to a 12-2 advantage eight minutes into the contest. A Vaughn Duggins jumper, though, started the Raiders on an 11-0 run as WSU took the lead for the first time at 13-12 following a John David Gardner foul shot with 8:17 remaining in the half.

The RedHawks, however, would follow the WSU run with another of their own, this time 13-0 as Miami went up 25-13 on a Hayes three at the 1:42 mark before a Duggins three in the final minute made it a nine-point game at the break.

Miami shot 41 percent from the field in the first half compared to 25 percent for Wright State.

A Ronnie Thomas jumper drew the Raiders to within seven in the opening minute of the second half, but the RedHawks followed with a 10-1 run over the next five minutes to open up a 37-19 margin.

Wright State would cut the deficit to 10 on three different occasions down the stretch, but could get no closer as Miami closed out the contest by scoring the final eight points.

The RedHawks shot 38 percent on the night overall and from three-point range while WSU hit for 27 percent. Miami also held a 42-26 rebounding advantage.

Gardner led the way for the Raiders with a career-high 12 points, eclipsing the nine he scored against Valparaiso last December 6. Duggins added 11 off the bench, but no other Raider managed more than five.

Hayes paced all scorers with 20 for Miami (2-2) while Michael Bramos chipped in 19.

Wright State (0-3) faces another tough road test on Saturday, November 29, as the Raiders head to Huntsville, Texas, to take on the Sam Houston State Bearkats (1-2), who had a 45-game nonconference home winning streak snapped by North Texas last Thursday. Game time is 8:00 Eastern.
