Box Score Wright State led throughout most of the second half, but a late 18-5 run broke the game open as the Raiders went on to a 59-46 win over the Oral Roberts Golden Eagles in first day action of the San Juan Shootout in Puerto Rico Saturday afternoon.
Both teams struggled offensively in the first half as WSU led 22-19 at the break. The Raiders shot 27 percent from the field while Oral Roberts was at 19 percent.
The Golden Eagles tied the game at 24 on a Kyron Stokes three at the 18:21 mark of the second half, only to see Wright State regain the advantage for good with six straight points on a John David Gardner three-pointer and an old-fashioned three-point play by Troy Tabler.
A Cory Cooperwood layup and a tip-in from Will Graham put the Raiders up 37-28 with 11:31 left, but Oral Roberts cut the deficit to four at 39-35 following another Stokes three with 9:01 remaining.
From there, however, Wright State took control as eight unanswered points, four of those coming on layps by N'Gai Evans, gave the Raiders a double-digit lead for the first time. After Stokes temporarily slowed the momentum with two foul shots, a Tabler free throw followed by a three from the sophomore guard made it 51-37 with 4:29 to play.
The WSU advantage grew to as much as 57-40 on another Evans basket in the final minute before Dominique Morrison hit a pair of threes for the Golden Eagles down the stretch.
Wright State shot 47 percent in the second half to finish at 37 percent for the game and went 11 of 14 from the foul line overall compared to 26 percent shooting and 12 of 20 at the line for Oral Roberts. The Raiders led in points in the paint 26-14 and in points off of turnovers 25-10 as they forced the Golden Eagles into 21 miscues.
Tabler, in his first action since Sam Houston State on November 29 due to a separated shoulder, came off the bench and led the Raiders with a season-high 16 points, 13 of those coming in the second half. Gardner continued his solid play of late with 13 points, marking the fifth time in the last six games that he has reached double figures, along with six rebounds and five assists. Evans added 10 off the bench as the Raider reserves outscored the ORU bench 29-6.
Morrison paced Oral Roberts (2-9) with 14 points while Stokes had 10 and Kevin Ford a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Wright State (4-7) takes on South Florida, a 73-64 winner over Murray State, in day two of the San Juan Shootout Sunday at 5:15 Dayton time.
