Box Score Wright State limited Green Bay to just 13 field goals for the game, but the Raiders could not overcome a 27-for-32 performance at the foul line by the Phoenix as it posted a 57-46 win Thursday night in the Horizon League opener for both teams at the Resch Center.
WSU held the lead for much of the first half, going up 14-8 on a John David Gardner layup with 10:29 remaining in the period and, after Green Bay went ahead with eight straight points, used two Will Graham foul shots to tie it at 16 at the 6:36 mark.
The Phoenix, however, closed the half with by outscoring the Raiders 17-3 the rest of the way, seven of those coming from Rahmon Fletcher, to take a 33-19 advantage into the break.
Both teams struggled from the field in the opening 20 minutes as Wright State was at 27 percent while Green Bay was at 33 percent. The Phoenix, though, hit 18 of 21 free throws compared to just five of seven for the Raiders.
Another Gardner layup cut the deficit to 44-39 with 6:10 to play and WSU again was within five at 49-44 following a Cory Cooperwood dunk at the 3:00 mark, but the Raiders would get no closer as Green Bay scored eight of the game's final 10 points to pull away.
The final shooting percentages were similar as Wright State shot 33 percent to Green Bay's 34 percent and despite the Phoenix holding a 34-32 rebounding edge, WSU led in points in the paint 22-10. The difference, though, came at the stripe as the Raiders were only nine of 16 compared to 27 of 32 for Green Bay, who was nine of 11 in the second half.
Cooperwood led all scorers with 14 for WSU, all of them coming in the second half, and added six rebounds while Will Graham had 12 points off the bench.
Randy Berry and Mike Schachtner paced Green Bay (4-2, 1-0 Horizon) with 13 points each while Troy Cotton had 10 and Terry Evans eight along with 13 rebounds.
Wright State (0-5, 0-1 Horizon) wraps up its swing through the Badger State Saturday with a 3:00 Eastern contest at Milwaukee.
