Box Score Wright State rallied back from a 16-point first half deficit to go up one with 4:15 remaining, but could not hold on as Milwaukee outscored the Raiders 13-5 the rest of the way for a 66-59 Horizon League decision at the U.S. Cellular Arena Saturday afternoon.
Milwaukee got off to a fast start, hitting four three-pointers in building a 16-5 advantage four minutes into the game. The Raiders closed to within eight at 23-15 on a Cory Cooperwood layup at the 8:46 mark, only to see the Panthers go on a 10-2 run over the next four minutes, capped off by threes from Tone Boyle and James Eayrs, to go up 33-17 with 4:13 remaining in the half.
The Panthers, who led 37-24 at the break, shot 48 percent overall in the first half, including seven of 12 from three-point range, while Wright State shot 35 percent.
The margin was 44-32 following another Eayrs three with 14:10 to play, but the Raiders would rally from there, outscoring Milwaukee 22-9 over a 10-minute span, eight of those coming from Will Graham and five by John David Gardner. WSU took the lead for the first time at 54-53 on a Gardner layup at the 4:15 mark.
Milwaukee, however, would score the next six points to take the lead again for good and after Wright State cut the deficit to 59-56 on two Cooperwood foul shots with 1:59 left, another Eayrs three as the shot clock wound down and four free throws in the final minute provided the final margin.
WSU shot 41 percent the final 20 minutes to finish at 38 percent while UWM hit for 42 percent to end at 46 percent. The Panthers were 10 of 18 from the behind the arc and 12 of 16 from the foul line compared to five of 16 and 14 of 20, respectively, for the Raiders.
The Raiders had four players score in double figures, led by Gardner with 14, Cooperwood 12, N'Gai Evans 10 and Todd Brown 10. Gardner added five assists, Cooperwood eight rebounds and Brown seven boards.
Eayrs paced Milwaukee (5-4, 2-0 Horizon) with 14 points off the bench and had eight rebounds while Boyle had 11 and Tony Meier 10.
