Men Win 10th Straight; Defeat UIC 52-51

Box Score

Wright State won its 10th straight game and fifth by one point this season Saturday night as Cooper Land hit two foul shots with 6.9 seconds remaining to give the Raiders a 52-51 Horizon League win over UIC at the Nutter Center.

Vaughn Duggins opened the scoring with a layup 28 seconds into the game, but UIC followed by outscoring the Raiders 18-8 over the next 10 minutes, six coming from Scott Vandermeer and five by Spencer Stewart.

A Scottie Wilson free throw and a Land layup started the Raiders on a 11-2 run of their own as WSU went back in front 21-20 on a Todd Brown three with 1:43 to go in the first half, only to see the Flames take a 22-21 lead into the halftime break on a Tori Boyd jumper with 37 seconds remaining.

Wright State shot just 27 percent over the first 20 minutes while UIC was at 33 percent.

The one-point advantage seesawed between the two teams to start the second half until the Raiders went up 34-29 on a Duggins three and a Wilson basket. The margin was still five until the Flames scored 10 of the next 11 points, five coming from Robert Kreps, to give UIC the 42-38 lead.

UIC went up 49-43 on a Josh Mayo three from the left wing with 4:07 to play, but the Raiders started their comeback from there as Brown hooked up with Jordan Pleiman for a backdoor layup, had a tip-in and then hit a three from the right corner to put the Raiders ahead 50-49 with 57.3 seconds left.

The Flames regained the lead on a Vandermeer tip-in with 19 seconds to play, but Land was fouled as he drove along the right baseline at the 6.9-second mark.

Land made both free throw attempts to make it 52-51, but UIC still had one more chance. A deflection by Brown resulted in a desperation three-quarter court heave by Mayo that hit off the rim as time expired.

The 10-game winning streak is the longest for the Raiders in their 21-year history of being in Division I and is the longest since winning 22 straight during the 1985-86 campaign. Wright State is now 5-0 in one-point games this season, 7-2 in games decided by three points or less and 16-4 in games decided by 10 points or less.

WSU shot 41 percent in the second half to finish at 33 percent overall and the Raiders seven of 10 free throws, including each of their final five, while UIC hit for 48 percent in the second half, but missed both foul shot attempts.

Brown led Wright State with 14 points, 11 coming in the second half, while Duggins had 11 and Wilson posted a double-double of 10 points and 12 rebounds.

Mayo paced all scorers with 16 for UIC (14-12, 8-7 Horizon) while Vandermeer had 10.

Wright State, now 19-6 overall and 11-4 in the Horizon League, wraps up the home portion of the schedule on Wednesday, February 20, as the Raiders host Detroit in a 7:00 contest. WSU's two seniors--Wilson and Pleiman--will be honored after the game.
