Box Score Wright State made it eight straight wins Saturday night, but it came down to the final minute as a Todd Brown three with 31.5 seconds left gave the Raiders a 50-47 Horizon League win over the Youngstown State Penguins at the Beeghly Center.
WSU broke an early 8-8 tie with a 14-2 run over a eight-minute span, five of those coming from Will Graham, but the Penguins responded with a 13-5 burst of their own to make it 27-23 with two minutes to play in the first half. The Raiders, though, closed the period by scoring the final four points to go up 31-23 at the break.
Wright State shot 54 percent over the opening 20 minutes while Youngstown State was at 32 percent.
The margin was 43-33 after a Brown jumper with 11:51 to play, but YSU outscored the Raiders 14-4 over the next 9:36 to tie the game at 47, the tying score being a John Barber three-pointer at the 2:15 mark.
Youngstown State had a chance to go in front as Vance Cooksey went to the line with 1:03 remaining, but he missed both attempts, setting the stage for Brown, who connected on a three with 31.5 seconds left.
The Penguins had one last chance, but Barber's three attempt rimmed out as time expired.
The Raiders shot 42 percent in the second half to finish at 49 percent overall while Youngstown State hit for 35 percent the final 20 minutes to end the night at 33 percent.
Brown led Wright State with 14 points while Graham had 10, Scottie Wilson nine and Jordan Pleiman six along with eight rebounds.
Barber paced all scorers with 25 for Youngstown State (8-18, 4-10 Horizon), but no other Penguin managed more than six.
Wright State, now 17-6 overall and 9-4 in the Horizon League, begins a three-game homestand next week with a pair of games as the Raiders take on Loyola on Thursday, February 14, at 8:00 followed by UIC on Saturday, February 16, at 7:00.
