Men Tie Defensive Record to Defeat Detroit in HL Opening Round

Box Score

Detroit led by as much as nine in the first half, but it was all Wright State after that as the Raiders outscored the Titans 48-16 the final 26 minutes to record a 60-37 win in the opening round of the Horizon League Men's Basketball Tournament Tuesday night at the Nutter Center.

Threes by Eulis Stephens and Josh Samarco gave Detroit the early lead and the Titans maintained that advantage through much of the first half, going up by as nine at 21-12 following a Stephens foul shot at the 6:43 mark.

A Scottie Wilson layup, though, started WSU on its comeback and after two Jordan Pleiman free throws, a Vaughn Duggins three along with another Wilson basket and two foul shots extended the run to 11-0 and gave the Raiders their first lead of the night at 23-21 with 3:29 left.

Chris Hayes snapped the Wright State string with a foul shot, only to see Gavin Horne hit a jumper in the lane and Will Graham make two free throws to give Wright State a 27-24 halftime edge.

Detroit shot 45 percent in the first half compared to 38 percent for the Raiders, but WSU made up the difference by going nine of 11 from the stripe to just three of six for the Titans.

Zach Everingham trimmed the margin to one with a jumper 20 seconds into the second half, but Wright State responded with an 11-1 run over the next five minutes, including a pair of Duggins three-pointers, to go up 38-28.

A Stephens three broke the streak, but Detroit scored just six points over the final 14:32 as the Raiders extended their lead with runs of 8-0 and 9-0 to end the game.

The 37 points scored by Detroit ties the lowest total ever given up by Wright State in the 38-year history of the program as WSU defeated Ohio Northern 44-37 on December 27, 1974. The previous Division I low was 38 when the Raiders defeated High Point 80-38 at the Nutter Center on December 16, 2000.

Detroit hit five of 22 shots the final 20 minutes to end up at 33 percent overall while the Raiders connected on 12 of 19 attempts, including six of 11 from three-point range, to end up 50 percent on the night.

WSU also controlled the boards by a 34-18 count and led in points in the paint (20-8) and bench scoring (16-1).

Wilson, who was the U.S. Army Player of the Game, posted a near double-double of 15 points and nine rebounds to lead the Raiders while Duggins added 12, Will Graham chipped in eight assists and six boards.

Stephens paced Detroit (7-23) with 18 points.

Wright State, now 21-9 on the season, advances to a Horizon League Second Round matchup against Valparaiso (20-12), who advanced with a 75-67 win over Green Bay. The Raiders and the Crusaders will face each other on Friday, March 7, at 6:00 at Hinkle Fieldhouse on the Butler campus.
