Box Score Trailing by two runs in the eighth inning, the Wright State baseball team scored five runs in the frame and claimed their second straight comeback victory over Bowling Green. The Green and Gold posted the 11-10 victory on Wednesday afternoon at Stellar Field.
The Raiders took an early 1-0 lead when Jeff Mercer in the second inning. WSU pushed the lead to 2-0 when Aaron Fields drove in an RBI in the third inning.
The two teams would exchange scoring innings in the third, fourth and fifth, with BGSU staking to an 8-6 lead.
WSU starter Chris Walden threw three innings and allowed three runs in his second start of the season. He fanned four batters and walked a pair in the no decision against the Falcons.
The two teams played the sixth and seventh inning scoreless before WSU would take the lead in the eighth inning.
In the eighth inning, WSU used a trio of hits to start the inning off of BGSU relief pitcher Nick Cantrell. Mercer and Gerald Ogrinc singled to start the inning and Ross Vagedes doubled to score the first run with no one out.
After a double play, Cantrell loaded the bases and Fields drove in his fourth RBI of the game to knot the game at eight runs apiece. After R.J. Gundolff scored on a wild pitch, Casey McGrew then smacked a two-RBI single into left field to put the Raiders ahead, 11-8.
Scott Ruthven threw two and two-thirds innings of scoreless relief and handed the ball to rookie Michael Meintel to start the eighth. Meintel allowed a pair of runs in the eighth, but shut the door in the ninth for his second save of the season. Ruthven improved to 2-1 overall as he allowed one hit and struck out one.
Fields and McGrew each drove in four RBI's in the contest, while Vagedes chipped in three hits and scored a pair of runs. Parker was four-for-four at the plate with a pair of doubles and run scored.
The Raiders improve to 9-13 overall with the victory and will look to extend their winning streak against Cleveland State in a three-game Horizon League series staring on Friday, April 4, at 6:00. That series will be played at Pipe Yard Stadium in Lorain, Ohio.
