Baseball Cruises Past Urbana in Midweek Tilt

The Wright State baseball team pounded out 18 hits and all nine WSU starters collected at least one hit in the 13-3 victory over Urbana on Tuesday evening at Nischwitz Stadium. The Raiders pushed their winning streak to three games as they outhit the Blue Knights 18-7.

WSU opened up the contest with four runs on four hits in the opening frame off of Urbana starter Brock Bender. Justin Parker collected the only RBI in the first inning, as the Green and Gold scored a run on an error and a pair of wild pitches to take a 4-0 lead.

Urbana and Wright State would exchange runs in the third inning, with WSU's coming after a John Kopilchack triple and an RBI single by R.J. Gundolff.

The Blue Knights added a run in the third inning to cut the Raiders lead to 5-2 and after a scoreless fourth inning, the Raiders took control of the contest.

The Green and Gold added three runs in the fifth inning on a pair of home runs from Jeff Mercer and Kopilchack. Mercer led off the inning with his fourth longball of the season to leftfield. After a pair of outs and a walk, Kopilchack sent the second offering from newly inserted pitcher Grant Martin sailing down the right field line for his third home run of the season.

The Raiders added a pair of runs in the sixth with RBI hits from Mercer and Casey McGrew to take a 10-2 lead on Urbana.

The Blue Knights (13-11) added a run in the eighth inning on an RBI single from Steve Froese to cut the WSU lead to 10-3.

The Raiders would load the bases with one out in the eighth and go on to score the final three runs of the contest to account for the final margin of 13-3. Zach Strauss and Mote each collected RBI's on the inning.

Chris Walded got the start and threw 3.1 innings and allowed two runs on two hits, striking out three batters. Rylan Ostrosky came on in the fourth inning and threw the next one and two-thirds innings scoreless to collect the first win of his WSU career.

Jordan Wolfe allowed a hit and struck out five batters in two scoreless innings of relief work. Griffin Knapp surrendered a run and struck out one, while Lee Valencheck tossed a scoreless ninth to close out the contest.

Mercer and Kopilchack each drove in a pair of RBI's, while six other Raiders collected one RBI in the contest. McGrew and Mote each belted out a trio of hits, while Parker notched two hits and scored three runs.

The Raiders are now 12-14 overall and will take on Cincinnati on Wednesday, April 9, starting at 6:30 at Nischwitz Stadium.
