Baseball Captures 10-3 Victory Over NJIT

Box Score

Jon Durket surrendered two runs in five innings of work and the Wright State baseball team smacked three home runs on their way to a 10-3 victory at Nischwitz Stadium on Saturday evening.

The Highlanders took an early 1-0 for the second straight game in the series on an RBI single by Dom Hayes in the first inning.

The Green and Gold knotted things up in the bottom of the second inning on a leadoff homer from Jeff Mercer, his seventh of the season. After a John Kopilchack triple, Sam Mote gave the Raiders the lead with a home run to left-center field. It was the first career home run for the sophomore and gave WSU a 3-1 lead.

R.J. Gundolff led the inning off with a single and came around to score on a wild pitch from the NJIT pitcher P.J. Saporito. After a Ross Vagedes smacked the Raiders third home run of the game to left field. Kopilchack added an RBI in the frame to give Wright State a 7-1 lead.

NJIT would tally a single run in the fifth inning off of WSU starting pitcher Jon Durket and add a run in the sixth off of WSU reliever Griffin Knapp.

Durket tossed five innings and allowed the two runs on eight hits, while fanning two batters. The junior improved his record to 6-2 overall and has fanned 50 batters in 66.2 innings of work.

With a 7-3 advantage, the Raiders scored three runs in the sixth to extend their lead to 10-3. WSU recorded two RBI's in the inning, each coming off of singles from Vagedes and Mercer.

Knapp allowed one run in an inning of work against the Highlanders. Bryce DeWeese and Greg Robinson each tossed a scoreless inning to close out the game on the mound for Wright State.

Gundolff and Mote each chipped in a pair of hits in the contest, with Mote collecting a pair of RBI's and two runs scored. Vagedes pounded out three hits, driving in three RBI's, and Hamilton walked twice in the game.

Wright State will conclude the regular season with a Noon contest on Sunday, May 18 against NJIT. The Raiders will honor their seniors following the contest.

Also, the Raiders found out that they will play the second game on Thursday, May 22 at the Horizon League Tournament. That game will start at 3:00 at Eastwood Field in Niles, Ohio, against the higher seeded opponent.
