Box Score Cleveland State outhit Wright State .165-.033 in winning the first two sets, but the Raiders turned the tables the rest of the way, outhitting the Vikings .220-.111 over the final three sets as WSU rallied for a five-set win in Horizon League action at the C.J. McLin Gymnasium Friday night, taking the match 23-25, 16-25, 25-21, 25-14, 19-17.
Wright State led 20-17 in the opening set, only to see the Vikings score seven of the next eight points, including two kills and two blocks from Beth Greulich. The Raiders drew to within one at 24-23 on a Becca Awaa kill and a CSU attack error, but Cleveland State won the set on another Greulich kill.
The Vikings again pulled away late in the second set as they scored 10 of the final 12 points to break away from a 15-14 lead, two as a result of Amy Benz kills.
Wright State, though, started its comeback in the third set as the Raiders took control with a 6-0 run to go up 13-5, two of those points coming on Lexi Leonhard closed out the set with a kill.
The Raiders then led just 11-10 in the fourth set before breaking it wide open with an 11-0 burst, a run that featured three Lizzy Gunn kills and a block along with two more Awaa kills. Gunn later added a service ace and a Jessica Woods kill forced the decisive fifth set.
Liz Fazio opened the fifth set scoring with a kill for Cleveland State, only to see Wright State follow with four straight points, the first two on kills from Leonhard and Awaa. The Raiders looked to be in command as they went up 11-5 on a block by Michelle Hammond and Sandifer but CSU would tally eight of the next 10 points to tie the score at 13.
Both teams then had two chances at match point, only to see the other pick up a point to stay alive, the final time being at 17 following a Cleveland State service error. Hammond then provided a block from the right side and another Viking attack error gave Wright State the victory.
CSU led in kills (59-54) and in blocks (16.5-9), but committed 22 attack errors over the final three sets compared to just 13 for the Raiders.
Sandifer led the Raiders with 13 kills while Awaa posted a double-double of 12 kills and 10 digs as did Woods with 10 kills and 18 digs. Leilani Tafuna added 26 digs, Leonhard 20 digs and Hammond 43 assists.
Benz paced the Vikings (2-10, 1-2 Horizon) with 15 kills as she hit .412 with nine blocks, while Greulich added 11 kills and 10 blocks. Ramminger chipped in 10 kills, Jordan Bateman 27 digs, Alexis Korovich 19 digs and Jordan Goad 44 assists and 13 digs.
Wright State (4-9, 2-1 Horizon) returns to action Saturday, hosting Youngstown State at 4:00.
