Box Score While it was snowing outside, it was raining three's at the Athletics-Recreation Center on the Valparaiso campus as the Wright State men's basketball team posted a 64-48 victory, winning their first Horizon League road decision of the year to even their league record at 3-3.
The two teams played the first 3:30 of the game scoreless, before Todd Brown connected on a three-pointer from the right wing to give WSU an early lead at the 16:33 mark. Valparaiso equaled the Raiders' first basket and the game was tied at 3-3 with 16:01 remaining in the opening frame.
The Green and Gold would extend their lead to 20 points as they sank five trey's, converted three layups and added three free throws during a 24-4 run over a 10-minute span. A pair of Brown free throws made the WSU lead 27-7 at the 5:04 mark, but Valpo would close the half on a 12-1 run and trail by only nine at the break, 28-19.
Valpo committed 10 turnovers and shot 26 percent from the field in the opening frame. Wright State connected on 41 percent of their shots from the field and was six-of-14 from three point range in the first half. Todd Brown paced all first half scorers with 12 points.
In the second half, the Crusaders cut the lead to six points on their opening possession of the half as Michael Rogers knocked down a three pointer to pull VU close at 28-22. John David Gardner started his second half with a three of his own just twenty seconds later and pushed the WSU lead back to nine points.
Valpo would get within seven again at the 16:58 mark on a Benjamin Fumey layup, but WSU used a 9-4 run over the next five minutes to extend their lead to double digits and the lead dipped under 10 only once from that point.
A 7-1 run pushed their lead to 14 points at the 7:27 mark and the Raiders made seven straight free throws down the stretch to account for the final margin at 64-38.
Brown led all scorers with 19 points, while Gardner posted 18 points, 16 coming in the second half, to go along with three rebounds and no turnovers. Ronnie Thomas grabbed seven rebounds for Wright State and Troy Tabler poured in 11 points on four-of-five shooting.
The Raiders shot 45 percent for the game, 50 percent in the second half, and connected on a season-high 10 three pointers. Valpo outrebounded WSU, 37-29, but Wright State forced 16 turnovers in the contest and boasted six steals.
The Green and Gold improve to 9-8 overall and are an even 3-3 in Horizon League play heading into their final game of their three-game road swing. The Raiders will be in Detroit to play the Titans on Friday, January 16th starting at 9:00. The game will be televised live on ESPNU.
