Men's Five-Game Winning Streak Snapped at Cleveland State

Box Score

Wright State led for much of the first half, but Cleveland State went up for good with an 18-0 run and outscored the Raiders 26-2 the final 7:58 of the period as the Vikings went on to a 59-50 decision over the Raiders in Horizon League men's basketball action at the Wolstein Center Saturday night, snapping WSU's five-game winning streak.

Todd Brown opened the scoring with a three and another triple by the junior guard put WSU up 10-4 with 12:20 to play in the first half. Troy Tabler made it 15-9 with a free throw at the 8:48 mark, but from there, however, it was all Cleveland State as a pair of J'Nathan Bullock threes along with two Cedric Jackson free throws started the 18-0 run.

Two Brown foul shots with 1:55 remaining ended that streak, but the Vikings tallied the final eight points of the half to go up 35-17 at the break.

CSU shot 48 percent over the first 20 minutes, including five of nine from three-point range, while the Raiders hit for just 24 percent overall. The Vikings also forced 11 turnovers while committing seven, resulting in a 17-2 differential in points off of turnovers.

The Raiders scored the first five points of the second half, including a Will Graham three, and went on a 16-4 run overall to draw to within 39-33 with 13:30 to play. A Tabler three at the 5:06 mark made it 48-44, but Norris Cole followed with a three of his own and Wright State could get no closer than five the rest of the way.

Wright State shot 45 percent from the floor in the second half to end up at 35 percent overall while the Vikings shot 32 percent to finish the night at 40 percent. CSU held a 42-32 rebounding advantage, led in points in the paint (18-14) and points off of turnovers (21-12) and went 12 of 20 from the foul line compared to only five of eight for the Raiders.

Tabler led the way for WSU with 12 points off the bench while Graham had nine, Brown eight and Cory Cooperwood eight along with 11 rebounds.

Cole paced all scorers with 20 for Cleveland State (15-8, 6-5 Horizon) while Bullock added 14, 12 coming in the first half.

Wright State (13-9, 7-4 Horizon) returns home next weekend for a pair of games, hosting Valparaiso on Thursday, February 5, followed by League leader and nationally-ranked Butler on Saturday, February 7. Both games start at 7:00.
