Raiders Fall to #18 Butler in Final League Tilt

Box Score

The Wright State men's soccer team took a lead over the 18th-ranked Butler Bulldogs into the half, but the Bulldogs would respond with three second half goals to win 3-1 on Saturday.

The Raiders struck first  in the 40th minute as Brad Bamberger received a cross from Tim Sampson and volleyed the ball in for his sixth goal of the season. It also marked the second straight match in which Bamberger netted a score.

Despite the Bulldogs (13-2-1, 6-1-1 HL) holding a 7-1 advantage in shots and an 8-1 advantage in corners, the Green & Gold would go into the half with a 1-0 lead. Goalkeeper Corey Whisenhunt played an integral role in the defense in the first half, tallying two saves.

The Bulldogs would even the game early in the second half thanks to a flurry of shots in the 53rd minute. Tyler Pollock saw his attempt hit the crossbar, but Boris Gatzky would collect the ricochet only for Whisenhunt to knock it away. However, the ball found the head of Julian Cardona for the score.

BU would score once again in the 65th minute. Ben Sippola, who entered the game in the 63rd minute, took control of the ball in the box, and buried a shot into the center of the net. Julian Cardona and Michael Clayton were credited with an assist.

Boris Gatzky would provide the final tally for the Bulldogs. Whisenhunt knocked a Matt Sall header away in the 82nd minute, but the ball was corralled by Gatzky who fired the ball into the net from 25 yards out.

WSU was ultimately outshot on the day 18-2, while also seeing Butler hold a 9-1 advantage in corners.

The Raiders finished the season with 6-10-1 record and a 2-5-1 record in the Horizon League. The Green & Gold saw four of their wins come in the final six games of the season. Senior Braden Fleak, who led the team with eight goals this season, finished the year as the fifth best goal-scorer in WSU history with 35 markers for his career.
