Box Score Wright State shot 42 percent and hit eight three-pointers on the night, but could not overcome a 24 of 31 foul shooting night by Butler as the top seeded Bulldogs advanced to the championship game of the Speedway Horizon League Tournament with a 62-57 semifinal decision over the #4 seed Raiders Saturday night at Hinkle Fieldhouse.
Todd Brown opened the scoring with a jumper 15 seconds into the contest, only to see Butler respond with a 12-1 run, half of those coming from Matt Howard. The Raiders, though, chipped away from there and regained the lead at 19-16 on a Troy Tabler three at the 7:43 mark.
Butler, however, would go on another run, this time 14-4, to go up 30-23 and the Bulldogs eventually took a 32-28 halftime lead.
The Raiders outshot Butler over the opening 20 minutes 41-36 percent, but the Bulldogs countered by hitting 13 of 15 at the foul line compared to just two of three for WSU.
A Brown jumper drew Wright State to within one at 39-38 three minutes into the second half, only to see Butler again open up the lead with another 14-4 run over the next nine minutes.
WSU made one last comeback attempt, cutting the deficit to 58-56 on a N'Gai Evans three with 1:14 to play, but could get no closer as Howard sealed the win with two foul shots at the 5.2-second mark.
The Raiders shot 42 percent on the night, including eight of 21 from three-point range, while Butler also shot 42 percent, but was just four of 16 from behind the arc. The Bulldogs, however, hit 24 of 31 foul shots, 11 of 16 in the second half, compared to just five of eight overall for WSU.
Cooperwood led Wright State (20-13) with 11 points, all but two coming in the second half, while Will Graham had 10 points and six rebounds. Tabler chipped in nine points off the bench and Brown had eight.
Howard paced all scorers with 24 for Butler (26-4), including a 14-for-15 performance at the stripe, while Hahn had 11 off the bench.
