Box Score Wright State trailed by as much as 12 in the first half and by nine with 14:50 to play, but saw a four-point lead slip away before a Troy Tabler three with 0.5 seconds remaining gave the Raiders a thrilling 76-73 Horizon League victory at Youngstown State Thursday night.
WSU led 22-17 following a Todd Brown layup with 8:36 to play in the first half, only to see the Penguins follow with an 18-1 run over the next six minutes, seven coming from both Sirlester Martin and Ashen Ward, to go up 35-23 at the 2:13 mark.
The Raiders, though, stormed back with a 9-0 burst the final 1:55 of the period, four by Vaughn Duggins, to only trail 35-32 at the break.
Brown opened the second half with a jumper to make a one-point margin, but YSU pushed the deficit back out to nine on two different occasions, the second at 49-40 on a Zack Rebillot layup with 14:50 left.
Wright State, however, chipped away and eventually went back in front 58-57 on a Tabler three at the 8:33 mark. The Raiders later led by four at three different times before two Vytas Sulskis foul shots with 52.4 seconds remaining tied it at 70.
Duggins hit two foul shots at the 44.3-second mark to put WSU up two and the difference was still two at 73-71 on a Tabler foul shot with 28 seconds left.
Sulskis tied it with a left-handed layup at the 17.5-second mark, but Tabler followed with the game-winner as N'Gai Evans drove the lane and kicked it out to the junior guard, who rimmed in a three from the right wing with 0.5 seconds to go.
Youngstown State had one last chance, but Brown intercepted the inbounds pass to seal the victory.
The Raiders hit 14 of 21 shots the final 20 minutes to finish at 54 percent overall, including seven of 12 from three-point range, while Youngstown State shot 54 percent in the second half to end up at 49 percent for the game, but just three of 12 from behind the arc. The Penguins dominated the boards by a 37-21 count and hit 14 of 18 at the foul line, but Wright State was 19 of 32 at the line and outscored YSU 21-7 in points off of turnovers and 14-4 in fast-break points.
Six WSU players scored in double figures, led by Brown's 16 points while Duggins adding 15, Tabler 14 off the bench, Cory Cooperwood 11, Evans 10 and Scott Grote 10 off the bench.
Martin paced Youngstown State (8-20, 2-15 Horizon) with 16 points off the bench, all but two coming in the first half, while Sulskis posted a double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds, DeAndre Mays 14 points and Ward 12.
With the win, WSU clinched the #2 seed for next week's Horizon League Tournament.
Wright State (19-10, 12-5 Horizon) wraps up the regular season Saturday with a 2:00 contest at Cleveland State.
