Box Score Wright State rallied from a seven-point second-half deficit to go up 59-57 with 2:48 remaining, but Cleveland State scored 11 of the next 12 points to win 68-63 in the regular-season finale for both teams Saturday afternoon at the Wolstein Center.
The Raiders scored the first six points of the contest, only to see CSU go up 19-10 on back-to-back three-pointers from Jeremy Montgomery. Back came Wright State, however, with a 15-0 run to regain the lead at 25-19 with 7:32 remaining in the opening half.
The margin was seven before the Vikings scored the final seven points of the half to tie the game at 32 heading to the break.
Cleveland State went up 44-37 on a three-point play from D'Aundrey Brown with 12:39 to go in the second half, but the Raiders answered with a 9-0 burst, four coming from N'Gai Evans, to go back in front. The game was then tied five more times, the final being at 60 on a Troy Tabler foul shot at the 1:36 mark.
CSU, however, went ahead to stay on a Montgomery jumper with 46 seconds left and four foul shots from Norris Cole and two by Tim Kamczyc sealed the win.
The Raiders hit just eight of 24 shots in the second half to finish at 39 percent overall while Cleveland State made 12 of 24 attempts to end the game at 49 percent. The Vikings also hit 14 of 16 foul shots compared to 20 of 25 for WSU.
Wright State held a 30-25 rebounding advantage, but CSU led 30-10 in points in the paint and 22-13 in points off of turnovers.
Evans led all scorers with 22 points for the Raiders while Vaughn Duggins had 14 and Tabler 11 off the bench.
Montgomery paced Cleveland State (15-16, 10-8 Horizon) with 18 points while Brown, Kamczyc and Cole each had 11.
Wright State (19-11, 12-6 Horizon) now turns its attention to the Speedway Horizon League Championship. The Raiders, who are the #2 seed, will play in the semifinals at 5:15 on Saturday, March 6, at Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.
