Volleyball Upsets Undefeated Ball State in Four

Box Score

Behind double-double efforts from Jessica Woods and 14 kills by Shaunda Sandifer, the Wright State volleyball team upset Ball State Saturday afternoon at the C.J. McLin Gymnasium, handing the Cardinals their first loss of the season by the scores of 25-16, 23-25, 25-23, 25-20.

Ball State came into the contest at 7-0 and had won all 21 sets in doing so, but that streak ended in the opening set as the Raiders broke away from a 13-10 advantage with four straight points, including a kill each from Woods and Splinter. The Cardinals would get no closer than five the rest of the way as WSU outhit BSU in the set .278-.062.

The second set was back and forth as Wright State went up 19-17 on a pair of Ball State attack errors before the Cardinals answered with four straight. The Raiders tied it again at 21, but BSU went in front to stay on a Brittany McGinnis tip and an Alyssa Rio service ace.

The third set featured four lead changes and 11 ties, the final being at 23 on a kill by Ball State's Jennifer Boyd. WSU, however, regained the lead on a Splinter kill and the freshman outside hitter followed with an ace to close out the set.

Wright State then jumped out to a 7-2 lead in the fourth set with five unanswered points, which included three more Splinter kills. The Cardinals cut the deficit to 13-11 before the Raiders tacked on four more, a burst started by a Molly Dolson kill.

The margin was again two at 20-18 until WSU used a 4-1 run to reach match point, which was achieved on a block by Splinter and Ashley Heyman.

Ball State had the advantage in kills (60-55), but the Raiders led .233-.180 in hitting percentage.

Splinter finished with a double-double of 17 kills and 19 digs while Woods posted one as well with 10 kills and 26 digs. Sandifer hit .407 with 14 kills, Dolson added 50 assists and Kenzie Egan tallied 17 digs.

Whitney Heeres paced Ball State (7-1) with 16 kills while Kelsey Brandl had 13.

Wright State (4-6) goes on the road for three matches next week, taking on Bowling Green on Tuesday, September 14, at 7:00 before opening Horizon League play on Friday, September 17, at Valparaiso starting at 8:00 Eastern followed by Loyola on Saturday, September 18, at 5:00 Dayton time.
