Volleyball Wins in Four at Bowling Green

Box Score

The Wright State volleyball team made it two straight wins over Mid-American Conference opponents Tuesday night with a four-set victory at Bowling Green, defeating the Falcons 25-17, 22-25, 32-30, 25-21.

The Raiders hit an impressive .321 in the opening set as they erased a 15-14 deficit with eight straight points, half coming on a pair of kills and a pair of blocks from Shaunda Sandifer.

WSU then rallied back to tie the second set at 21 with four in row, including a block and kill by Alaina McAuley, only to see Bowling Green score four of the final five points to even the match.

The third set featured 10 ties and four lead changes. The Falcons went up 24-23, 27-26 and 29-28 before the Raiders answered each time to stay alive. Bowling Green tied it at 30 with a kill before Wright State took the set on kills from Heidi Splinter and Sandifer.

The final set was more of the same with 11 ties and three lead changes as the match had 34 ties and 13 lead changes overall. Bowling Green used a 4-0 burst to go up 19-18, but the Raiders followed with a 5-0 run of their own, a run that included three Sandifer blocks.

A service error ended the run, but Wright State eventually claimed the match on another kill each from Splinter and Sandifer.

It was the first win for Wright State against a Mid-American Conference opponent on the road since sweeping Toledo on August 25, 2006.

The Falcons held a 53-46 kill advantage, but WSU led .197-.124 in hitting percentage and recorded 14 blocks to just seven for Bowling Green (2-8).

Splinter finished with 14 kills to lead the Raiders while Sandifer had 13 kills along with four solo blocks and five block assists. Ashley Heyman hit .467 with eight kills, Molly Dolson dished out 41 assists and had nine digs and Kenzie Egan added 16 digs.

Wright State (5-6) opens Horizon League play on Friday, September 17, as the Raiders travel to Valparaiso for an 8:00 Eastern match. WSU then heads to Loyola on Saturday, September 18, for a 5:00 Eastern match.
