Box Score Jessica Woods posted a double-double of 13 kills and 13 digs, but it wasn't enough as Butler defeated Wright State in Horizon League volleyball action Friday night at Hinkle Fieldhouse. The Bulldogs won the match 25-21, 25-17, 17-25, 25-17.
Butler jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the opening set, only to see WSU close to within one at 10-9 on a Bulldog attack error. The Bulldogs, however, followed with a 4-0 burst and held off a late Raider rally to take the set.
Butler again built an early advantage at 8-2 in the second set and extended to 18-7 before Wright State tallied four straight, the last two on a kill and a block from Sandifer. The Raiders would get no closer, though, the rest of the way as the Bulldogs scored six of the next nine points.
The third set was WSU's turn to have an early lead at 10-2, including a pair of Ashley Heyman service aces. Butler stormed back to tie the set at 14 and later went up 17-16 on a Raider attack error, but that would be the final point for the Bulldogs as Wright State closed the set on a 9-0 run, three coming on kills by Woods.
Butler (8-6, 3-0 Horizon) took control of the final set with a 12-4 start and the Raiders would get no closer than four the rest of the way.
The Bulldogs finished with a 54-45 kill advantage, outhit WSU .231-.188 and recorded 12.5 blocks compared to six for the Raiders.
Sandifer led the way for Wright State with 12 kills in hitting .385 with four blocks while Woods recorded a double-double of 13 kills and 13 digs. Heidi Splinter added nine kills and 10 digs.
Wright State (6-8, 1-2 Horizon) hosts Eastern Michigan on Tuesday, September 28, before returning to Horizon League play on Friday, October 1, by welcoming in UIC. Both matches start at 7:00 in the C.J. McLin Gymnasium.
