Men Sneak Past Youngstown State 66-62

Box Score

Wright State outscored Youngstown State 18-4 over the final 6:26 as the Raiders pulled out a 66-62 Horizon League win over the Penguins at the Beeghly Center Thursday evening.

YSU scored the first five points of the game and held the lead for most of the first 14 minutes until WSU went up for the first time at 19-18 on a Vaughn Duggins jumper at the 6:44 mark. The score was tied again at 24 on an Armond Battle basket before the Penguins scored the final four points of the half.

Neither team had a strong shooting opening 20 minutes as Wright State hit for just 29 percent, including one of nine from three, while Youngstown State was at 37 percent, three of 13 from behind the arc.

The Penguins extended their run to 9-0 in scoring the initial five points of the second half and, after Battle cut the deficit to 41-40 with a putback at the 13:23 mark, used a 17-8 run to go up 58-48 with 6:47 remaining.

A N'Gai Evans, an AJ Pacher triple made it 60-59 with 3:26 left.

A Vytas Sulskis jumper temporarily slowed the momentum until Wright State went in front to stay at 63-62 on two more Evans free throws and a running jumper by Troy Tabler with 1:55 to go.

It stayed that way until Tabler connected on a pair at the line at the 44.3-second mark. YSU tried to tie the game twice with a three-pointer, but could not connect and Matt Vest sealed the win with a foul shot at the 7.2-second mark.

WSU had a tough night shooting as the Raiders shot just 32 percent for the game, including five of 18 from three-point range, compared to Youngstown State hitting for 41 percent despite going five of 26 from behind the arc.

Wright State, however, finished with a 46-35 rebounding advantage, 18-10 on the offensive end, as the Raiders led 19-11 in second-chance points. WSU also connected on 23 of 30 foul shots, including 18 of 23 in the second half, while the Penguins were just nine of 18 for the contest.

Evans and Duggins each had 14 points to lead the Raiders while Tabler had nine as did Pacher off the bench. Mpondo added seven points and 11 rebounds.

Ashen Ward and Devonte Maymon both had 12 points for Youngstown State (7-11, 1-7 Horizon) while Sulskis chipped in 11 points and nine boards.

Wright State (13-7, 6-2 Horizon) closes out the Northeast Ohio road trip and the first round of Horizon League play on Saturday with a 2:00 contest at Cleveland State. The game is the Horizon League Game of the Week and can be seen on the Horizon League Network, on WWRD in the Dayton area, on ESPN3.com and on ESPN Full Court.
