Box Score An Armond Battle free throw with 1.4 seconds left proved to be the difference as the Wright State men's basketball team defeated Youngstown State 63-62 Saturday at WSU's Nutter Center.
It was all Youngstown State in the early going as the Penguins used a 19-3 run to take a 30-13 lead with 7:14 remaining in the first half. WSU, however, stormed back with an 18-5 run of its own, seven coming from both Julius Mays and Battle, to cut the deficit to four before the Penguins took a 38-32 lead into halftime.
Youngstown State shot 52 percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes, including nine of 15 from three, but the Raiders also shot well at 46 percent altogether and three of six from behind the arc. WSU was also nine of 12 at the foul line compared to three of five for the Penguins.
Mays put Wright State up 42-41 with a layup at the 14:24 mark of the second half and neither team had more than a four-point edge until a driving layup from Battle followed by an AJ Pacher three gave the Raiders a 62-57 lead with 2:45 to play.
Back came the Penguins, though, as two Kendrick Perry foul shots and a Blake Allen three tied the game for the 11th time at 62 with 1:32 left.
That set the stage for Battle as he was fouled on a drive to the basket with 1.4 seconds left. He made the first, but missed the second. After a timeout with one second left, the Penguins had one last chance, but a shot by Damian Eargle went off the back of the rim as time expired.
