The Wright State baseball team led by one heading into the ninth, only to see Butler score three times in the final frame to pull out a 9-7 win Friday night at Nischwitz Stadium.
Tristan Moore gave the Raiders a quick 2-0 lead in the first as after Jake Hibberd singled and went to second on a Corey Davis bunt, he drove a 3-1 pitch over the fence in straight away center for his sixth home run of the season.
Butler went in front for the first time with three in the top of the third before WSU answered with three of its own in the bottom of the inning. Kyle Mossbarger led off with a bunt single along the first base line and following a Davis hit through the right side, Moore drove in Mossbarger with a single through the left side. A Ryan Ashe double produced the second run and Garrett Gray plated the final run with a sacrifice fly.
The Bulldogs, however, tied it at 5-5 on a Jimmy Risi home run in the fifth and went up 6-5 as Pat Gelwicks reached on a fielder's choice in the sixth.
Wright State regained the advantage at 7-6 in the seventh on RBI singles by Ashe and Zach Tanner and the Raiders looked to be in control as Michael Schum pitched out of a jam in the eighth and retired the first batter in the ninth on a dazzling play by Justin Kopale at shortstop.
Two walks and a hit by pitch, however, loaded the bases and a ground out to second by Mike Hoscheit tied the game and moved two runners into scoring position. Austin Miller then hit a comebacker that got by Schum for a run and another run scored on an error to make it 9-7.
WSU looked to rally in the bottom of the ninth as Moore singled with one out, but the game ended as pitcher Chase Byerly deflected an Ashe comebacker, turning it into a double play.
Moore went four for five with three RBI and three runs scored to pace the Raider offense while Davis had two hits and scored twice and Ashe had two hits and drove in two.
The second game of the Wright State (28-14, 14-5 Horizon) and Butler (20-22, 8-11 Horizon) series is scheduled for Saturday at 2:00.
