Box Score The Wright State baseball team scored three times in the first and, behind the pitching of Joey Hoelzel, went on to a 5-1 win at Youngstown State Saturday to remain undefeated in the Horizon League.
WSU took control of the contest early with the three-run first. Brad Macciocchi led off with a walk and moved up to second on a two-out walk by Kieston Greene. Andrew McCafferty drove in Macciocchi with a double down the right field line and Sean Murphy followed with a single that plated Greene and McCafferty.
The Raiders made it 4-0 in the third as walks to Michael Timm and Andrew McCafferty, a wild pitch and a Murphy infield hit resulted in a run. The lead grew to 5-0 an inning later on a sacrifice fly from Joe Ford.
On the mound, Hoelzel (4-2) was in control as he went eight innings, allowing just five hits and a walk while striking out nine. The Penguins strung three hits together to score a run in the sixth, but the senior righthander escaped further damage with a strikeout to end the frame.
Offensively, Murphy had two hits and three RBI.
Wright State (14-11, 8-0 Horizon) wraps up the series with a 1:00 contest on Sunday.
