Box Score 2 The Wright State baseball team won twice in opening the season Friday at E.S. Rose Park in Nashville, defeating host Belmont 14-7 and Toledo 8-1.
The Raiders wasted no time to get the offense going against the Bruins, scoring three times in the of the first. Mark Fowler started the game with a double to left center and, after advancing to third on an Andrew McCafferty single, scored as Michael Timm had a hit to left. McCafferty later scored on a balk and Timm came in on a Gabe Snyder single to right.
Belmont tied the score with a run in the second and two more in the fourth before WSU regained the advantage with three in the fifth. Sean Murphy was hit by a pitch and John Brodner singled, setting the stage for Snyder, who connected for his first collegiate home run, a three-run blast.
The Bruins again rallied to tie the game with three runs in their half of the sixth, but again Wright State would regain the lead, this time with a run in the seventh as a Mitch Roman infield hit plated Ryan Fucci, who reached on an infield bunt hit.
The lead stayed 7-6 before the Raiders broke the game open with seven in the ninth. After walks to Murphy and Brodner along with a Fucci double loaded the bases, pinch-hitter Derreck Garcia cleared them with a grand slam to left, his first home run as a Raider.
A Roman triple and a Fowler double resulted in another run and the final two runs came in on a McCafferty sacrifice fly and a Timm hit to left.
Jack Van Horn (1-0) picked up the win in relief of starter Robby Sexton, who struck out four in 5.1 innings of work. Offensively, Fowler and Roman each had three hits with Snyder and Garcia each driving in four.
In the second game, Wright State broke a scoreless deadlock with two runs in the fourth. McCafferty led off with a walk and, two outs later, Fucci connected for his first WSU home run.
Toledo answered with a solo homer in the bottom of the fourth, but that turned out to be the only run Raider starter Jesse Scholtens allowed in his seven innings of work. Scholtens, making his WSU debut, struck out nine and gave up just four hits and no walks.
The Raiders broke the game open with six runs in the final three innings, starting with a run in the seventh on a RBI single by Jason DeFevers. A Fucci sacrifice fly and a Brodner single made it 5-1 in the eighth and a Murphy three-run homer in the ninth rounded out the scoring.
Wright State wraps up the weekend with a pair of games on Saturday, taking on Toledo at 10:30 Eastern followed by Belmont at approximately 4:30.
