Box Score The Wright State men's basketball team led by one with two minutes to play, only to see Youngstown State score the final six points as the Penguins pulled out a 74-69 decision Sunday afternoon at WSU's Nutter Center.
WSU jumped out to a 10-3 lead following back-to-back threes from Grant Benzinger, but YSU answered with a 12-2 run to go up 17-14 with 12:10 remaining in the first half. The advantage seesawed back to the Raiders as a Grant Evans three made it 23-21 at the 8:57 mark before the Penguins used a 7-0 run to take a 36-34 lead into halftime.
Youngstown State shot 59 percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes while Wright State shot 45 percent, including four of 11 from three-point range.
Another YSU run, this time 10-0 run broke a 38-38 tie early in the second half and the Penguins still led 63-56 on a Shawn Amiker three before the Raiders went on a 13-5, capped off by a Benzinger layup, to regain the edge at 69-68 with 2:13 to play.
That turned out to be the final points of the game for WSU, however, as two Amiker foul shots put Youngstown State up for good at the 1:57 mark and a jumper in the lane by the senior guard with 39.8 seconds remaining made it 72-69.
Shaun Stewart then hit two foul shots with 14.4 seconds to go to make it a two-possession game and round out the scoring.
The Penguins continued their hot shooting in the second half, hitting for 54 percent to end the game at 57 percent overall compared to 49 percent for the Raiders. YSU also led 34-26 in points in the paint and 19-12 in points off of turnovers.
Benzinger led WSU with 22 points and a season-high seven rebounds, with the 22 points being one shy of his season best setting in the previous game on February 12 against UIC. Michael Karena added 14 points while Evans had nine off the bench. Reggie Arceneaux dished out six assists.
Marcus Keene paced Youngstown State (11-17, 2-11 Horizon) with 20 points and eight boards while Bobby Hain had 14 and Amiker 13.
Wright State (11-15, 3-9 Horizon) wraps up the three-game homestand on Wednesday, February 18, against Oakland starting at 7:00.
