Men Drop 88-72 Decision at Cleveland State

Box Score

The Wright State men's basketball team shot 67 percent in the second half and 54 percent overall, but could not overcome Cleveland State shooting 61 percent from the field and 24 of 29 at the foul line as the Vikings won 88-72 Saturday afternoon at the Wolstein Center.

WSU opened the scoring on a Grant Benzinger three and went up 5-4 on a Michael Karena layup at the 16:12 mark of the first half, but that turned to be the only leads of the day for the Raiders as CSU broke a 10-10 tie with 13 straight points over a five-minute span.

A Reggie Arceneaux three-point play with 6:01 remaining drew Wright State to within six at 26-20 before an 18-9 run helped the Vikings take a 44-33 halftime advantage.

Cleveland State hit 16 of 24 shots in the opening 20 minutes, including four of six three-pointers, while Wright State shot 42 percent overall, but was just two of 10 from behind the arc.

The Raiders cut the deficit to four on three different occasions midway through the second half, the final time at 66-62 on an Arceneaux three at the 9:58 mark, but would get no closer as CSU gradually pushed the margin back in double figures.

WSU made 16 of 24 shots in the second half and was five of eight from three while Cleveland State continued its hot shooting from the first half, making 14 of 25 attempts, and sealed the win by connecting on 16 of 17 foul shots in going 24 of 29 overall.

Joe Thomasson led the Raiders with 17 points off the bench, 12 coming in the second half, and added six assists while Karena, Benzinger and Arceneaux each had 13.  With his 13, Arceneaux became the 29th WSU player to ever reach the 1000-point plateau.  Chrishawn Hopkins chipped in 10.

Charlie Lee paced Cleveland State (15-10, 9-2 Horizon) with 27 points while Anton Grady had 22, Trey Lewis 15 and Andre Yates 10 off the bench.

Wright State (11-13, 3-7 Horizon) begins a three-game homestand on Thursday, February 12, as the Raiders host UIC at 7:00.
