Baseball Wins Final Game of Series at #11 Miami

Box Score

For the second straight Sunday, the Wright State baseball team picked up a win over a ranked opponent on the road as, behind a six-run second, the Raiders went on to a 12-6 decision over #11 Miami at Mark Light Field.

The Hurricanes scored three times in the first, only to see WSU answer with six in the top of the second.  Sean Murphy struck out but reached first on a wild pitch to start the frame and Gabe Snyder walked.  One out later, Murphy scored on a throwing error during a failed pickoff attempt and after a Jason DeFevers hit to right and a Matt Morrow walk, Mark Fowler made it 3-2 with a single through the left side.

Mitch Roman gave the Raiders the lead for good with a two-run double to left and Andrew McCafferty rounded out the inning as he plated two more with a hit to right.

Wright State tacked on three runs in the fourth as Snyder singled with the bases loaded to drive in two and Michael Timm had a hit to right to drive in the third run.

Miami (8-4) cut the deficit to 9-6 with single runs in the fourth and eighth before WSU broke the game open with three in the ninth.  Timm had a RBI single to knock in the first run and after a Fowler squeeze bunt plated another, the final run came in as Roman doubled down the right field line.

The Hurricanes pulled out wins in the first two games of the series with two runs in the bottom of the ninth each time, but would not do it a third time as Jack Van Horn, who came on to get the final out in the eighth, pitched a scoreless ninth for his first save of the season.

Seven Raiders had two hits as part of a 16-hit attack in Roman, McCafferty, Ryan Fucci, Snyder, Timm, DeFevers and Morrow, with Roman driving in three and Fowler, McCafferty and Timm two each.

Jeremy Randolph (1-0) picked up his first collegiate win with 1.1 innings of relief while Luke Mamer allowed just one run in four innings of work and Logan Blair pitched a scoreless seventh.

Wright State (5-4) hits the road again on Wednesday, March 4, for its first midweek game of the season as the Raiders take on the Kentucky Wildcats in a 4:00 contest.
