Box Score The Wright State baseball team won its third Joe Nuxhall Classic title in four years Wednesday night, outslugging host Cincinnati 15-9 at Marge Schott Stadium.
WSU scored in all but one inning the entire game, starting with two in the first, including an Andrew McCafferty RBI double, and added another in the second as John Brodner and Mitch Roman had back-to-back doubles.
The Bearcats tallied a run in the second, but back came the Raiders in the third as Brodner singled in two. Solo home runs by Mark Fowler, his second of the season, and Ryan Fucci, his eighth, highlighted a three-run fourth to make it 8-1.
Cincinnati cut into the deficit with a four-run fourth, but WSU added two more in the fifth and one in the sixth eighth to go up 12-6. The Bearcats scored three in the bottom of the eighth, only to see the Raiders answer with a Sean Murphy two-run triple and a Fucci sacrifice fly to round out the scoring.
The 15 runs tied for the most by Wright State in a game this season, matching the total scored at Northern Kentucky on March 25, a game WSU also won 15-9.
E.J. Trapino (4-0) was credited with the win after pitching two scoreless innings in relief, striking out two.
Offensively, Brodner collected three hits with two RBI and two runs scored. The junior third baseman was selected as the Classic MVP as he was four for eight in two games with four RBI.
Fowler had three hits, three runs scored and two RBI while Roman and Fucci each had two hits and two RBI, Murphy three RBI and McCafferty three runs scored.
Wright State (24-10) returns to Horizon League play on Friday as the Raiders begin a three-game series at Oakland starting at 3:00.
