Men Drop Decision to Oakland

Box Score

The men's basketball team trailed by just six midway through the second half before a 14-2 Oakland run lifted the Golden Grizzlies to an 89-73 Horizon League decision Monday night at WSU's Nutter Center.

A Mark Alstork three gave the Raiders a 12-10 edge six minutes into the contest, but that turned out to be the final lead of the game for WSU as Oakland followed with eight straight points.  Wright State tied it at 25 on two Mark Hughes foul shots at the 6:09 mark, only to see the Golden Grizzlies answer with a 13-2 burst, five of those coming Martez Walker.

The Raiders closed to within three in the final minute before a Walker three made it 45-39 at the break.

Both teams shot 41 percent from the field in the first half, but the Golden Grizzlies were also five of nine from three-point range and a perfect 14 of 14 at the foul line while WSU was four of nine from behind the arc and 11 of 12 at the stripe.

The Golden Grizzlies opened the second half with a 15-5 run, but the Raiders chipped away and only trailed 64-58 following a Justin Mitchell three-point play with 8:50 to play.  Another Oakland run, however, this time 12-0, extended the margin to 80-60 with 5:20 left.

OU shot 46 percent for the game, 11 of 19 from three, and hit 22 of 23 free throws compared to 40 percent shooting, six of 16 from three and 21 of 27 at the line for WSU.

Alstork led the Raiders with 18 points while Joe Thomasson had 13 and Biggie Minnis 12 off the bench.

Oakland (19-9, 11-4 Horizon) had five players score in double figures, led by Walker's 22 off the bench while Jalen Hayes posted a double-double of 17 points and 11 rebounds.  Kay Felder also recorded a double-double of 15 points and 12 assists while Percy Gibson had 14 points off the bench and Max Hooper added 12.

Wright State (16-12, 10-5 Horizon) closes out the home portion of its schedule on Saturday, February 20, as the Raiders host Northern Kentucky at 7:00.  WSU's five seniors--Daniel Collie, Michael Karena, Minnis, Thomasson and JT Yoho--will be honored following the game.
