Box Score The Wright State men's basketball team led by as much as 13 midway through the second half, but had to hold off a Northern Kentucky rally before picking up a 67-64 Senior Night victory over the Norse Saturday at WSU's Nutter Center.
The Raiders jumped out to a 12-6 lead after a fast-break layup by JT Yoho at the 13:28 mark, but NKU hung close until WSU stretched the advantage to 30-20 on a Grant Benzinger jumper with 2:49 remaining in the first half.
The margin was eight until a foul shot and layup by Drew McDonald made it 32-27 at the break.
WSU shot 41 percent in the first half compared to 37 percent for Northern Kentucky, but NKU made 11 of 16 free throws while the Raiders were eight of 12.
The Wright State lead seesawed between seven and 11 until a Mark Alstork three and a Benzinger jumper gave the Raiders their biggest advantage at 55-42 with 9:08 to play.
The Norse, though, chipped away at the deficit and eventually closed to within one at 65-64 on two Tyler White foul shots with 44 seconds left.
Northern Kentucky had a chance to take the lead as WSU turned the ball over on its next possession, but Joe Thomasson came up with a steal and converted two foul shots at the 5.7-second mark to make it a three-point game.
NKU had one final opportunity to tie the game and force overtime, but White's deep three attempt hit off the back of the rim as time expired.
The Raiders shot 52 percent in the second half to end up at 46 percent overall and hit 16 of 24 free throws while the Norse shot 44 percent after halftime to finish at 41 percent and made 22 of 31 foul shots.
Karena led Wright State with 17 points, 11 coming in the second half, while Benzinger had 16 off the bench and Thomasson had 10, all after halftime, along with eight rebounds.
White paced Northern Kentucky (9-18, 5-11 Horizon) with 21 points while McDonald and Cole Murray each had 11.
Wright State (17-12, 11-5 Horizon) heads to Northeast Ohio to wrap up the regular season next week, taking on Youngstown State on Thursday, February 25, at 7:45 followed by Cleveland State on Saturday, February 27, at 1:00 at Quicken Loans Arena, home of the NBA's Cleveland Cavaliers.
