Baseball Wins Series Opener at #8 NC State

The Wright State baseball team erased an early 4-1 deficit with nine unanswered runs and then held off a late NC State rally to defeat the #8 ranked Wolfpack 10-8 in the series opener Friday afternoon at Doak Field.
John Brodner gave the Raiders an early 1-0 lead with a RBI single in the second, only to see NC State respond with four in the bottom of the inning, including a two-run home run by Shane Shepard. WSU, though, cut the deficit to 4-3 in the third as Matt Morrow walked and Sean Murphy followed with a two-run homer to right center, his third of the season.
After Wright State tied it in the fourth on a solo home run to right off the bat of Gabe Snyder, his third of the year, the Raiders went in front to stay with two runs in the sixth. With one out, Brodner doubled to right center and a JD Orr bunt single put runners on the corners. Peyton Burdick drove in Brodner with a sacrifice fly and Zach Weatherford plated Orr with a double to right center.
WSU added four more runs in the seventh, the first two coming as Mitch Roman was hit by a pitch and Ryan Fucci smacked a home run to left, his second of the season. A Brodner triple drove in Snyder, who had walked, and Brodner scored as Orr chopped a single up the middle.
The Wolfpack scored a run in the eighth and three in the ninth to trim the margin to two, but Jack Van Horn retired the final two batters to pick up his second save of the year.
Jesse Scholtens (1-0) had a rough second, but his other five innings were of the shutout variety as the senior righty struck out eight and walked just one in allowing six hits.
Offensively, Brodner finished with three hits and two RBI while Fucci, Snyder, Orr and Weatherford each had two hits.
Wright State (5-0) and NC State (3-2) continue the three-game series with a single game Saturday at 3:00.
