The Wright State baseball team scored single runs in three of the first four innings and, behind strong pitching and three double plays, picked its second win over a Power 5 conference team this season with a 3-1 decision at Georgia Saturday afternoon.
The Raiders picked up a run in the first as JD led off with a walk, stole second, moved up to third on a balk and scored as Gabe Snyder hit a sacrifice fly to left. WSU then made it 2-0 an inning later as Peyton Burdick had a lead-off single, advanced to second on a John Brodner bunt, went to third on passed ball and scored on a wild pitch.
Wright State extended the margin to 3-0 in the third, again with Burdick starting the rally, this time being hit by a pitch. Brodner walked and after Burdick was forced out at third, Jason DeFevers delivered a single to center to plate Brodner.
Raider starting pitcher Robby Sexton (1-1) threw five shutout innings, aided by two double plays, as he limited the Bulldogs to three hits and two walks while striking out two.
Georgia picked up a run in the sixth, but Logan Blair pitched a scoreless seventh and E.J. Trapino earned his first save of the season by blanking the Bulldogs over the final two innings, allowing no hits while striking out three.
It was the second win for WSU this season over a Power 5 conference team as the Raiders defeated #8 NC State 10-8 on February 26.
Wright State (6-5) and Georgia (7-4) will play the rubber game of their weekend series Sunday at noon.
