@WSU_WBasketball Beats Detroit Mercy

On Sunday the Wright State women's basketball team defeated the Detroit Mercy Titans at home by a score of 78-59. The Raiders moved to 16-5 overal and 8-1 in the Horizon League. During the win, Symone Simmons set Wright State's all-time rebounding record hauling in 11 against the Titans. Prior to the game Simmons needed five rebounds to tie the record of 897 held by Lori Collins since 1995.
 
Four Raiders scored in double-digits: Mackenzie Taylor (16), Emily Vogelpohl (12), Symone Simmons (12), and Michal Miller (10). Tyler Frierson led the team in rebounds, hauling in 13 boards.
 
1st Quarter
Symone Simmons started off scoring for the Raiders after and impressive passing performance around the Titans. Two possessions later Mackenzie Taylor added a three from deep to make the score 5-2. Taylor also pulled in a steal from the Titans on the other end that led to a Michal Miller floater. The mistake would trigger the first Detroit timeout of the game with the score standing at 7-2 with 8:08 remaining in the first quarter. In the next two minutes Tyler Frierson would come up with two rebounds and a steal but the Raiders were unable to capitalize on her efforts. At the 4:23 mark, Imani Partlow would receive the ball under the basket and then feed it to an Emily Vogelpohl cutting through the lane would finish with a layup. On the next Raider possession Angel Baker would sink a deep jumper to put the Raiders up 12-5. The Titans would pull back on the lead after sinking consecutive three-pointers to pull the score within one. Angel Baker and Teneshia Dixon would each score in the next 30 seconds to put the Raiders up by five points. Compounding Raider fouls would allow the Titans to come back within two points. With under 45 seconds in the quarter Anisja Harris would find the net from behind the arc to extend the lead back to five. One possession later the team would send the ball around before Anisja Harris fed Tyler Frierson under the basket with a pinpoint pass, Frierson would add two points to her game total.
 
2nd Quarter
Emily Vogelpohl began scoring in the quarter with a high floater off the glass and one possession later Symone Simmons would hit a deep shot from the corner and send the game into a Detroit timeout. Mackenzie Taylor would come up with the next big plays for the Raiders with a powerful drive under the basket and then one possession later follow it up with the timeout triggering three-pointer. After the timeout Symone Simmons would come up with an offensive rebound and a putback to put the Raiders up by 20 points. The Titans would add their own streak putting in ten straight points against the Raiders. Michal Miller would put an end to the Titan's streak with short jumper. With 1:24 remaining in the half Symone Simmons would pull in a defensive rebound which led to a score on the other end by Tyler Frierson. With the rebound Simmons broke the Raider's all-time rebound record which stood for 24 years. In the waning seconds of the half, Tyler Frierson would add two more points to make the score 40-27.
 
3rd Quarter
After a Michal Miller three-pointer rung out of the basket Emily Vogelpohl collected the offensive rebound and put it back in for two points. The next Raiders points would come from Mackenzie Taylor driving from the corner but the Titans would have an answer with a three-point shot. Three-pointers and compounding fouls would allow the Titans to pull the score back within striking distance, 44-38. Off of an inbound pass from Emily Vogelpohl, Mackenzie Taylor would sink a three-point shot from deep. One possession late Emily Vogelpohl would hit a high jumper off the glass to put the Raiders back up by double-digits. Coming out of the media timeout Anisja Harris found Imani Partlow under the basket where Partlow was able to finish the play with two points. The next Raiders points would come from Emily Vogelpohl who came away with a steal and would finished the play with an uncontested layup to put the home team up 55-43. After making one free throw on the previous possession, Teneshia Dixon would put in an impressive jumper in a crown of Titans. After moving to a press in transition the Raiders would end the quarter by forcing a backcourt violation against the Raiders.
 
4th Quarter
Coming out of the gates, Angel Baker found a cutting Symone Simmons under the basket to start off scoring in the quarter. After a missed Titan jumper, the Raiders were able to get an uncontested two points from Michal Miller off of an Angel Baker assist. Michal Miller also put in the next two points with a turn-around jumper while falling back in the lane to make the score 65-47. Coming off of a Nia Sumpter steal, the Raiders would feed the ball to Mackenzie Taylor who was able to drop in a three-pointer. Coming out of the media timeout, Emily Vogelpohl would add two points off of free throws to her game total. After receiving a foul while shooting, Michal Miller would sink one of her free throws to extend the Raiders' lead to 19 points. Two possessions later, Teneshia Dixon would also receive a foul. Dixon would convert one of her shots from the line to put the Raiders up by 20 with three minutes remaining. One minute later Dixon would add two more points from the foul line. With two minutes left Angel Baker would step in front of an errant Titan pass and put in an uncontested layup for the Raiders. With 29.2 remaining the game, the Titans would send Jalise Beck to the line where she would sink both of her foul shots.

The Raiders will be back in the Nutter Center on Thursday, January 31st when they take on UIC. Tipoff on Thursday night is slated for 7:00pm. The Raiders previously played the Flames on December 30th when they won 79-46.
