Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Thomas Nugent

On Thursday night, the Wright State women's basketball team moved to 17-5 overall and 9-1 in the Horizon League with their 72-47 win against the UIC Flames. Prior to the game Symone Simmons was recognized at half court for becoming Wright State's all-time leader in rebounds.
 
Three Raiders scored in double-digits against the Flames. Symone Simmons led the Raiders with 15 points, Tyler Frierson tallied 12, and Emily Vogelpohl added 11 points. Symone Simmons led all player in rebounds with 15 and tied her season high.
 
 
1st Quarter
The Raiders were the first on the boards on Thursday night after Michal Miller dished the ball to Tyler Frierson under the basket for a layup. Frierson put in the next points with a reverse layup after an assist from Symone Simmons. Emily Vogelpohl added the next two with a short jumper to make the score 6-3. To triple up the Flames, Angel Baker hit a three from corner. Mackenzie Taylor would hit a three with just over five minutes in the quarter to make the score 14-7. On the next possession, Taylor would force a steal which would turn into two points from Emily Vogelpohl. After the media timeout, the Flames were forced into a shot clock violation by a strong Raider defense. After the violation, Imani Partlow put in the next two points with a turnaround floater. After an impressive passing performance Anisja Harris was the next Raider on the board after an assist from Emily Vogelpohl to put the Raiders up 20-7. UIC would have an answer though, hitting a shot from deep then drawing a foul and converting one point from the line. With 37 seconds in the quarter, Symone Simmons would collect her own rebound and have a putback to put Wright State up 22-11.
 
2nd Quarter
Angel Baker the first play of the quarter for the Raiders with a powerful block in the lane against the Flames. Symone Simmons put the Raiders' first points on the board with a shot high off the glass. Anisja Harris made the next play for the Raiders after stepping in front of an errant Flames pass. Harris' play would turn into three points from Emily Vogelpohl and also break the 3:19 scoring draught. On the next Wright State possession, Symone Simmons would also hit a shot from behind the arc. Mackenzie Taylor would be the next Raider to become part of the deluge of threes. Taylor's three-pointer would put the Raiders up 34-15 against the Flames. With under 30 seconds in the half, Imani Partlow would gather in an offensive rebound and put in two for the Raiders. With five seconds left in the half Mackenzie Taylor would come away with a steal and make a solo drive to the basket where should would end with two points to make the score 38-19.
 
3rd Quarter
Symone Simmons was the first player to put points on the board in the second half. Tyler Frierson was the next Raider to light up the scoreboard after a dish from Symone Simmons under the basket. After a foul on a shot in the lane, Frierson would be sent to the free throw line. Frierson would convert both shots to put the Raiders up 44-25. Two possessions later Symone Simmons would hit her second three-pointer of the night. Jalise Beck would be the first Raider after the media timeout to score after collecting an offensive rebound and hitting a layup. One possession late Teneshia Dixon would add two points with the assist coming from Nia Sumpter. After a Flames turnover, Jalise Beck would add another two points to her game total. Two Flames free throws would pull the score back within 20 points, but the Raiders would answer two possessions later. Coming in transition Michal Miller found a cutting Emily Vogelpohl under the basket, Vogelpohl would convert the layup to make the score 55-33 with 1:09 in the quarter. One possession later Vogelpohl would be the one making the assist after finding Tyler Frierson under the basket to put the Raiders up by 24 entering the fourth.
 
4th Quarter
At the 7:59 mark, Michal Miller would open up scoring in the quarter by converting one of her two free throws after a shooting foul. Nia Sumpter would come up with the next big play for the Raiders when a Flames player came driving down the back court and Sumpter swatted their shot out of bounds. The Flames first score of the quarter would come at the 6:28 mark and make the score 58-35 in favor of the Raiders. Two Raider possessions later Angel Baker would add two more to her tally with a short jumper. After the media timeout the Raiders would add one point of off a free throw from Dasia Evans. After the miss on the second foul shot, Tyler Frierson would come up with the rebound in the crowd of Flames players and put in a layup for the Raiders. One possession later Dasia Evans would put in a layup from an Emily Vogelpohl dish. After a Mackenzie Taylor steal, Evans would add another two points in the lane. Seventeen seconds later Emily Vogelpohl would come up with a defensive rebound and drive to the other end to finish the play with an unassisted layup. With under one minute remaining in the game the next point would come from Teneshia Dixon who would convert one of her two foul shots. After a fake out in the corner against a Flames defender, Dasia Evans would drive to the basket and convert a long floater.

In the Raiders' first game against the Jaguars, Wright State and IUPUI when to overtime with the Raiders coming out ahead by a score of 78-75. Saturday's game is scheduled to tipoff at 2:00pm in the Nutter Center.
